“Overpriced and Overrated”

The Wickaninnish Inn & Pointe Restaurant

Feb 9, 2008

I planned a romantic get away for my wife's birthday at the WIck, and having stayed there twice before we were both eagerly anticipating the experience. Being one of the premier properties in BC and Canada we had no problem with the cost of the stay. The location, ambience, and service have always been second to none. Unfortunately, we should have quit while we were ahead.

We arrived late and had a reservation for the restaurant almost immediately so didn't have much time to examine the room.
A table awaited us in the dining room, against the floor to ceiling windows, overlooking the Pacific. The problem is, with the glare from inside you really have no view of the ocean during dinner. At almost $300 for dinner for two with 3 glasses of wine the dinner was decent, not execptional. My advice, skip the pricey dinner and have lunch or breakfast.

The real problems began in our room after dinner. Pouring a hot bath for my wife, I immediately noticed that the previous guests had also taken a bath. The steam exposed the imprints of both male and female body parts pressed into the glass window beside the tub. Accented with expresssions of affection and desire which are unprintable, this "body art" graffiti rather spoiled the mood. Exhausted we retired to the bed, where we noticed a musty odor, and what felt like 3 loads of laundry piled up under the bed sheets. It seems housekeeping didn't dry out the mattress top, or flatten it. Rather than a restful sleep, we endured what felt like a night on a pile of smelly rocks. I only exaggerate slightly.

Ok, so the big suprise was for the morning when I arranged a 6" birthday cake to be brought up for my wife along with coffee and tea. Perfect, it arrived right on time. Then I signed for the bill. I understand that room service is not cheap, but seeing that I was charged $80 for a very small cake left me shaking. The total bill for the coffe, cake and tea was over $140. I have no problem paying for great service, but really! $140 for a cake and coffe!!??
I just felt ripped off.

Check out came and my wife explained our issues with the bed and the issues with the bathroom cleanliness.
Completely unsymphatetic, the desk manager made us feel as if we were trying to save money on the bill when all we really wanted was someone to pretend that they cared. I paid over $1100 for a one night, 18hr stay with one dinner, and one cake. For that kind of price I expect top notch service and attention to detail, I've received better of both at $50 pensions in Europe.

While beautifully located, the WIck is overrated and overpriced. Save your money, stay somewhere cheaper, the beaches are free and thats the why you came to Tofino anyway.

“The Ultimate West Coast Experience”

The Wickaninnish Inn & Pointe Restaurant

The Wickaninnish Inn hangs out inches from the Pacific Ocean surf. It's a good several hours drive westward from the nearest city but well worth making the trip. We went off-season ('winter storm' season) and the weather obliged - incredible surf. They even provide boots and mackintoshes to walk the beach in.

We went there for our 35th anniversary, and I can't say enough about the staff - irrepressibly helpful and friendly. The rooms are wonderfully appointed with gas fireplaces, ocean views, fancy tubs, good books, ...

The restaurant has magnificent views and is definitely 'high end', which wasn't really us, but we enjoyed it anyway ($15 for one ladle full of soup, no matter how tasty it is, doesn't quite go over with me). Don't miss their breakfasts, however, they are huge and delicious. Didn't try the spa so can't advise you there.

Yes, it's pricey, but you'll leave fully satisfied for the experience.

“We felt a little wierd”

The Wickaninnish Inn & Pointe Restaurant

We stayed here while we were travelling around BC by car this summer. The rates are high, but we thought it would be worth it given all the good reviews we read about the location. The location was indeed quite nice. The room was very nice as well, but the service was lacking. The used towels were left behind on the bathroom floor after the turndown service. We also found the front desk people a little unusual in their expressions, although their service was OK. Its subtle and hard to explain. My wife and I, both world travellers, felt that may be they are not used to having many non white customers. Or may be our instinct was wrong. In any case, we didn't feel the warmth that several other reviewers described.

“Great Place....but Bring Lostsa Money!”

My wife and I stayed at the Wick from November 7 -10, 2007. We found the place pretty met our expectations and then some. We had dinner and breakfast at the Pointe and had a couple's hot rock massage at the Spa during our stay. Neither disappointed - quite the contrary. The food was wonderful and the massage heavenly. Our room overlooked the rocks and the beach and the view was quite spectacular at times when the waves came crashing in. Service was great and everyone from the front desk to the restaurant staff were exceptionally nice and helpful.

Now the downside. The drive across the Island can be taxing and slow. We flew in from Calgary to Comox and then drove to the Wick across the Island. It is stated to be only 219 kms, but it will take you upwards of 3 hours plus. The road is narrow, windy and slow and then when you add in some rain and fog...well you get the picture.

The Inn is beautiful, but very expensive. While we enjoyed our meals at the Pointe, they were very pricey. The spa treatment likewise was expensive. So bring money!

Finally, as one other commenter stated, there is not a lot to do at this time of year in the area and if the weather is bad on top of that. Also, Tofino was a bit like a ghost town. Not much going on in the off season. at times, we felt like we were the only ones walking around town.

Beautiful location & nice rooms (great beds) however service is inconsistant. This was our second visit (as we try to give every place a second chance) and once again the service fell short of expectations for a high end resort. Room service, front desk, and the Pointe restaurant are areas where the service needs to be improved. Unfortunately, do not think we will return.
