After much deliberation we decided to book the Red Crow for our stay in Tofino in spite of the higher rate of $169 per night. We were seduced by the promises of waterfront, wilderness and wildlife.
Unearthing this place turned out to be a magnificent find. The cape cod style house sits right on the water overlooking Browning Passage, Meares Island, and at low tide, the Tofino mudflats. The views are uninterrupted and incredible.
We stayed in the River Otter suite which is separate from the main house with a private entrance. The accommodation is not luxury by any means, think cosy but spotlessly clean, spacious, comfortable and boasting a truly homely feel. The suite opens onto a private verandah with seating where we would relax and enjoy the views.
The amenities available at the B&B are fantastic - we took canoes out for a paddle at high tide, we used the firewood for waterside campfires and we were lucky enough to have uninterrupted use of the two mountains bikes to zip around town. The highlight though was the hot tub, down a path in the rainforest where you could lie back and enjoy tranquility whilst gazing at the stars, more than once we heard wolves howl in the darkness as we soaked in the tub.
The B&B is managed by Bryden who we got on really well with. His hospitality really added that little bit extra to our stay - we clicked with his laid back attitude, perfect for Tofino! He was full of advice for us and directed us to some good places to eat and drink. He was always more than helpful whilst respecting our privacy. He even dropped our bags to the bus stop when it was time to leave.
A homemade breakfast is available each morning at extra cost - we only opted for this for our last day and it was delicious - fresh fruits and freshly baked pastries. Other mornings we just used the handy coffee making facilities in the room and supplied our own light breakfast.
Wildlife was all around - bald eagles, river otters, great blue herons, egrets, various species of waterfowl and even harbour seals. Great for photography. We got up early in the hope of seeing a wolf as other guests had done but without luck.
We had some great finds whilst we stayed at the Crow - try the amazing tacos at Tacofino in the nearby Outside Break retail complex, Chocolate Tofino at the same complex is also incredible, the nearby Tofino Brewery does a wicked IPA best drunk on Chesterman Beach at sunset! If you're into biking the 18km ride to Long Beach followed by an ocean-side ride on the beach itself was a particularly scintillating experience.
All in all a truly amazing stay. We loved the Red Crow and couldn't find fault with it. The only downside was having to leave which we were truly sad to do. We hope to get back there one day soon.
