“misled by reviews, overrated, overpriced”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2010

We dined at Hastings House for our anniversary dinner after reading some reviews.
My tomato salad with heirloom tomatoes were cut up and tasteless.
The crusted halibut was soggy, not fresh...and the vegetables, including pea in the pods were overcooked as if the whole dish was precooked and microwaved. We have dined at many restaurants, ordinary and high end but the food at Hastings House was the worst we ever encountered. There were only 3 tables occupied in this large house restaurant.

“Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2010

Romantic and charming setting but the food falls short.
Our duck confit was amateurishly overcooked. Sockeye salmon, which is usually an outstanding entree, was mediocre

“Misleading Advertising”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2010

Check out their website - they offer three-course menus for $65 & heavily promote the local Salt Spring Island lamb. The sample summer menu includes the lamb. When you get there, however, sure enough the lamb is a menu option, but if you want to choose it, you have to pay an extra $25 (i.e. $90 for three courses -- see attached photo).
The food was pretty good on the whole, although uneven, & the view is nice, but even at $65 it's well overpriced.

“Very good food, beautiful old world decor, lovely setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2010

We had the fixed menu and it was a delight from top to bottom! We savoured our meal at a table that faced a window overlooking the painstakingly manicured gardens and the ocean.

Be sure to read about the history of the property and some the marital scandals that took place!

Fabulous experience.

“Absolutely delicious and a gorgeous setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2010

We ate at Hasting House on our honeymoon as we had received a gift certificate as a wedding gift. The dining room is in a charming mansion and the service is formal but friendly. The food and wine were fantastic. The chef's menu changes every day - all made with local and organic food. The dessert really stood out - a strawberry shortcake unlike any I have ever tasted with a lemon shortbread crust, organic strawberries and mint whipping cream. They serve my favorite wine from Naramata Bench - La Frenz - which is a rare treat to find in a restaurant. We are in our mid-thirties and we did feel a little out of place as most of the guests were considerably older than us. It does have a bit of a formal feel so if you are not comfortable with that, it may not be for you. Nonetheless, the food was certainly exceptional and I enjoyed my visit. Be sure to get there a bit early so you can walk around the grounds of the hotel, which are just gorgeous.
