“A distinctly pleasant surprise in remote Prince Rupert”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2009

I was expecting a clean room in a "motel". The Crest was much nicer than that. It is beautifully set on beautiful Prince Rupert harbor. My room had just been redone. In addition to being fresh and clean, it even had a bit of style. The hotel (which isn't much from the outside) is within walking distance of the Norther BC Museum and the fun shops on the wharf. The only real competition is the Coast Hotel. It looked like a Stalinist block from the outside and wasn't on the water. The Crest isn't a Four Seasons, but compares favorably with Four Points and can be very proud of the way it competes in the 3 to 3 1/2 star category. The food is the restaurant was good and the restaurant is an all glass affair that hangs out over the truly gorgeous harbor.

I think this hotel could be great, they have a fantastic location & a few good staff. however, they have little loyalty to those who stay there often & do not train their staff to adequately meet their clients needs. We return year after year for an event & I STILL have had bad experiences(staff not paying attention to simple requests), although....I admit I return. You can't beat the view from the dining room, even on a cloudy day & the staff in the restaurant are great.

I spent 2 days here in September 2008. My room was on the second floor, and they were renovating the third floor, so at 08:00am the construction noise started and that meant I was up for the day. My room had a view of the parking lot (they called it a city/mountain view). A room with a view of the harbour would probably be worth the money, but I felt my room was a bit too pricey.

The rooms are comfortable, and [mostly] quiet and clean.
The exception is the waterside rooms have a spectacular view of the harbour, BUT they overlook the patios where the smokers from the bar are herded, so it may be noisy and smoky at times.
Even at midnight.

The dining room also has a wonderful water view and the food is good. The fish, for example, is not overcooked, like it often is at places further inland. Wine selection is OK but the wines are outrageously overpriced [double the gov't liquor store price, which itself is outrageous], so you're going to get hosed if you like a glass of something with dinner.

The exercise room has modern machines and a very good steamroom.
However, you're on the frontier. So, no papers before 11 am and no national papers, period. Tour busses block the main entrance for hours on end and leave their polluting diesel engines running for good measure -- and nobody from the hotel lifts a finger.

However, the good points outweigh the downside, so I'll be back.

  • Liked — location, room, dining room
  • Disliked — smokers, no national newspapers

The Crest is the place to stay if you are visiting Prince Rupert. I found the staff very friendly and helpful. The dining room was great with a beautiful view of the harbour. Ample parking. Right in town. Rooms are fine, not luxurious but I don't think anything is in the Prince Rupert downtown hotels. It was fine. I'd stay there again.

I stayed here off the ferry. Arrived late, the hotel was easy to find. The room good and the staff helpful. Its perfect for a one night stay and the views over breakfast (which was very good) over the water were great.
