My wife, son, father and I just came back from a wonderful week at the Best Western. Many others have explained the amenities offered, so instead of repeating them over and over I will just state my opinion about the hotel and area. The location is fine, close to Skaha beach, but still a drive if you are hauling coolers, floaties, beach bags, lawn chairs, etc with you. We hit both Skaha and Okanagan Lake (which is definitely a drive away), and preferred Skaha. The water is calmer, the wind lighter, and it feels comfortable and relaxing. The Okanagan side is more lively, with all the motels right across the street, restaurants and shops nearby, but a rockier shoreline and choppier water.
This hotel has been in Penticton for what seems like forever. I remember walking by it 40 years ago, and it has always been seen as a step above the many other motels in the area. The service, amenities, and staff did not let us down on this trip. The rooms are clean, comfortable, and reasonably new, with only the bathroom looking like it could use a little updating. Having both an indoor and outdoor pool is fabulous, and my family took full advantage of both, along with the indoor hot tub.
Our mornings were helped along by the wonderful free continental breakfast. The staff were attentive and friendly, and the food was good, very similar to other Best Western continental breakfasts. After that, we were off to the beach or taking a drive to visit some of the many fantastic wineries in the area. Most days were spent on the absolutely gorgeous beaches, soaking up the sun and enjoying the view.
After coming back from the beach and having a nice shower, our nights were spent sitting on a table in the courtyard, firing up one of the charcoal bbq's, and cooking a great meal. There is a gas grill available as well, but using a charcoal grill while meeting many different people from all over was one of the best parts of the trip. I mean you're on holidays, slow down, enjoy yourself and meet some interesting and entertaining people! The hotel is very family friendly, with kids running around or playing on the slides, gliders, etc. Being family friendly, it quieted down about 10 pm, and we were never disturbed or woken by noise.
One peeve I did have was the number of dogs running around. I have a dog, but left him at home with family. I love dogs, and most people were courteous and picked up after their pooches. Unfortunately, the rule about being on leash was never enforced. Dogs were running loose all over the place, and this lead to dog crap being left in the grass, and little kids running through it. Please, keep your dog on a leash and clean up after it. This is not the staff's fault, and I felt bad when I saw a staff member having to clean up dog crap because of lazy owners.
Overall, the stay was excellent, the price was a little high, but the amenities were top notch. Pentiction seems a bit like the town BC forgot. Kelowna and Vernon seem much more modern, but Penticton seems to have that faded gentility. It may be a bit worn and tattered around the edges, but it is comfortable. Watching people cross Lakeshore Drive to get an ice cream, or carrying a floatie from their motel to the beach, always makes me think of a simpler time when it wasn't all chain restaurants and giant RV's.
Thanks, Best Western and Penticton for giving us a trip down memory lane.
