We were signed up to attend the opening weekend of the Okanagan Wine Festival, and needed a place to stay. I am in the hotel business and spend all of my waking hours in hotels, so wanted to experience a B&B instead. Two of my colleagues had stayed at casa Del Coyote in the past, and gave it rave reviews, so we went ahead and booked it. We have stayed in B&Bs before, so had some idea of what to expect. However, we weren't fully prepared for this experience. Casa Del Coyote is beautiful to look at, to be sure. The physical presence of an Arizona/New Mexico style home, set into the mountainside, as well as cacti and sagebrush on the property, make this as authentic as you can get. But where the real presence is felt, is when you start to get to know the hosts. Helen and Mark are two of the most beautiful, warm and friendly people you could ever hope to meet. Helen's caring attention to detail, and Mark's unmatched cooking made this a weekend to remember. On each night that we came "home" they had lined the sidewalk to the door with lit candles. There was always a roaring fire in the fireplace, and they made it clear that their home was our home.
We were a little concerned that the B&B was in the mountains outside of Penticton, but as it turns out, we had nothing to worry about. It is a lovely drive, either toward Pentiction or toward Keremeos. The road twists and turns through beautiful, rolling rangeland, and during our weekend the autumn leaves were in full splendour. Getting to downtown Penticton for dinner on our first night was only 20 minutes, door-to-door.
Overall, we were extremely pleased with our stay at Casa Del Coyote, and I hope we can stay there every year for Wine Festival.
PS: For breakfast, don't miss Mark's signature dish, Huevos Rancheros. So delicious that we had them both mornings!
