“Great hotel for a stopover”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2006

This hotel was booked for us via the Rocky Mountaineer Railway as our overnight stopover. We were incorrectly given a smoking room which was immediately rectified by the reception staff who apologised profusely. Rooms were clean and reasonably sized. The hotel was equipped with large games room and great pool which sadly we did not have time to use. Unfortunately we turned up on a Sunday night and found it extremely difficult to find a restaurant open. We finally found "The Keg" Steakhouse which was wonderful - great food , great service, great price! The waitress found out that it was our anniversary and served us a complimentary dessert - a huge slice of mocha ice cream cheesecake. We decided to complete our night of celebration with a bottle of champers!

Stayed here for one night en route to Vancouver. I was very pleasantly surprised by this hotel. The staff were really friendly and efficient. The rooms are large and clean with all the facilities you need. Despite being right next to the train tracks, we weren't disturbed by noise. The pool and hot tub were really nice - there was also a gym and games room which looked good. The restaurant at the hotel is apparentlty quite new, the breakfast buffet was excellent. Kamloops itself was very quiet (to be fair it was a Monday evening), but we wandered down the main street and found a great bar serving over 100 different types of beer and a little further down a really excellent Italian restaurant. I would recommend The Thompson Hotel to anyone staying over in Kamloops.

Stayed for one night on route to Whistler. Comfortable and clean. A little dead after dark and never managed to find the bar. Unless you want to eat at the hotel it is a long and very hot walk (in summer) to find any alternatives. Excellent breakfast, one of the best we had on our holiday. Kamloops is a bit of a backwater with not much to attract tourists.

We required just a place to stay on a return trip from the BC coast and only paid $76 CA (plus taxes) for an Executive King room. The price was extraordinarily reasonable for Kamloops in the summer season (booked through Expedia). We weren't looking for anything high end, just clean and convenient.

The room was clean, but the king bed took up most of the space in the room. There was a microwave and fridge--handy for snacks. The room windows were sealed, but the heat/ac worked quite well (considering the 33 degree day). The room's view was of the area out the back of the hotel, which was a little rundown--this is where the parking was. We were assured that there were security cameras, but there were warnings everywhere that the hotel was not responsible for anything.

The reason that we won't be going back was that the room we were in was adjacent to the bar/club and we didn't get any peace and quiet until after 2:00 a.m. When this was mentioned upon check out, the manager said that the noise level of those rooms closest to the club was well known and we should have been asked if this bothered us when we were checking in. Well, we weren't asked and it did bother us greatly as we had a very early start the next day.

So, be forewarned to check and make sure that your room is NOT near the club and insist that it isn't. Unless you are planning to be partying in the club and then it won't matter!!

Stayed as part of a Rocky Mountaineer Red Leaf package. We'd expected very little, and were pleasantly surprised - nowhere near as bad as what "basic" usually implies. Our only gripe was that no non-smoking rooms were left, but after spraying some aftershave round the smell disappeared pretty quickly and wasn't as much a problem as I'd feared.

Nothing special, but perfectly adequate for one night.

We stayed there for one night, and although the common areas (lobby, pool, game room, etc.) are beautiful and obviously well maintained, our room ressembled more to one of a not-so-commandable motel. The 'unique' arm chair was falling apart on one side, the tables were used, we could feel the springs in the mattress. The room was clean though. But the walls are so thin I could follow the phone conversation of the next door lady, and she was not speaking especially loud, in fact, whenever they opened or closed the door of their room, our entire room was shaking.

The view on the back of the hotel is a large parking lot with train tracks (which are also noisy). Contrary to the other reviews, the breakfast was apparently not free for us, they rather asked 6$/person -- we finally went elsewhere.

Staff was nice, but the fact that they give the price of towels and facecloths in the bathroom made me feel like a robber, and don't even think to ask for a secon pouch of their horrible coffee, they will charge you 2$ for it. I am still having a hard time to imagine I stayed a the same hotel the other reviewers went to, but apparently my standards must be too high. Hard to imagine there is no better place in Kamloops.

Our hockey team stayed here in early Feb. and it was far nicer than I expected. Clean rooms, fantastic free breakfast, games room and indoor pool for the kids. Right next door to the arena and close to all amenities includung the theatre. They really cater to sports groups but keep them separate from the other rooms to please all customers. We had a fantastic time and would definitely go back!
