“Food”

Disgusting. Chinese food and buffet don't go together in the same sentence. Cold, MSG to the hilt, leaving your teeth furry! Awful place! Old people like it because they can stuff themselves cheap, but anyone with any taste whatsoever... would say no to this place.

“Classic Chinese Buffet”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2012

Good price for typical Chinese fare. On our visits we haven't found the food too greasy, so perhaps we've just timed it right. With any buffet, you will get better food quality if you go when the food is fresh. This place is closed between lunch and supper -- so you get the idea....go first thing for lunch, or within the first half hour after they open for supper. You won't be disappointed and you don't have to stuff your face. The food will be hot and freshly prepared. There is enough variety to allow a patron to choose several different items and walk away with a full plate, and be satisfied. It's important to remember that being reasonable at a buffet means you don't pig out because that's a silly reason to eat there in the first place. A buffet provides variety. We especially enjoyed the perogies, and some of the seafood items were good as well. A word of advice for the egg rolls/spring rolls: any place you go these will usually be too greasy -- so avoid them altogether. Going here to eat once in a while is part of the deal with eating at a greasy spoon/chinese restaurant. We all crave it and it won't kill you to dig in. But we usually limit our visits to 2-3 times a year....when we are passing through. Found the restaurant overall to be clean and reasonably maintained.

“Bland blah food, but OK if you want to stuff your face cheaply”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2012

Gourmands beware: This is a place where you go to gorge on plate after plate of food cheaper than you could buy it at the supermarket, but there is absolutely nothing else to recommend it. There is no seasoning in any of the food, with the exception of the dry garlic pork which were way oversalted, likely by mistake. The meat in the broccoli beef had an unchewable chunk of gristle in it the size of a loonie. The various noodle and rice based dishes literally have no taste whatsoever, as if the starches had been boiled in plain water and then just tossed onto the tray. OK, it wasn't all horrific: The jello and sectioned oranges are good, (kind of hard to screw up jello and fruit) but the rest of the buffet will be considered dumpster filling to anyone with a modicum of tastebuds. But that is probably the way that the crowds of mostly older Chilliwackians must prefer it because the place is packed. Let's face it, $8.95 won't buy you a side dish in a decent Vancouver restaurant but it will allow you to eat so much that you'll need a stomach pump at Mandarin Gardens. Chilliwack is always renowned for the profound organic "aroma" rising from the nearby fields so when you add the so-called food at Mandarin Gardens you have a combination that is completely vomit-inducing.
