“Deserves an 'excellent plus'!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2013

Our travel company had given us duff instructions so well worth calling the wonderful Susy first to check. Then dead easy to find.

Had the most brilliant stay - we felt like family, were well fed (great blueberry pancakes) and interesting/wide-ranging conversations over dinner. John was an excellent guide for our all day trail ride. The best nights' sleep we've had in Canada and so quiet. Seeing grizzlies was a bonus. Surroundings are stunning and it really is remote. We can't imagine enjoying a stay more. Do go if you possibly can

Room Tip: All are great - trust Susy

If you can imagine the perfect place for a get-away-from-it-all holiday, then Elkin Creek in the Nemaiah Valley, BC, is definitely it… especially if you like some adventure mixed in with your relaxation. Nestling under the enigmatic Mount Tatlow (remember not to point at it!) and next to Vedan Lake, Elkin Creek couldn’t be in a more fortunate setting for relaxing, spotting wildlife or riding out in the unspoiled Chilcotin foothills.

It is a bit of a trek from Vancouver, so we flew to Williams Lake and were picked up by Sue, the guest manager, for the two-and-a-half hour drive to the ranch. Some people prefer to drive the whole way up from the city, while others charter a light plane to land at the property’s private airstrip. However you decide to travel, you can be guaranteed that the ensuing welcome will be warm, the food excellent and the accommodation comfortable. And the scenery? Well, that’s simply stunning.

We stayed five nights at the ranch and were immediately made to feel at home by Sue, chef Lydia (helped by her mum) and wrangler Kat, who not only knows everything there is to know about horses but also takes stunning rodeo photos. The experience was made even more enjoyable by son and daughter of the owners – Luke and Hailey – who were helping out for the week. Luke went beyond the call of duty by leading several kayak trips down the creek and getting a drenching in the process, while Hailey was a cheerful companion in the lodge and on the rides.

In addition to riding – they have horses for all abilities – there’s kayaking, boating, fishing for rainbow trout and Dolly Varden, archery, bikes, a well-equipped games room, and the opportunity to practise your roping skills. We just missed the local rodeo but arrived in time for a performance by a local band in the bar on the first night.

Our last evening was made equally memorable with a BBQ to which the neighbours had also been invited. Throughout our stay, Lydia made sure that it was impossible to feel hungry even for one minute: she prepared awesome breakfasts, lunches, teas and suppers and supplied a profusion of additional snacks ‘just in case’. The food was invariably delicious, including the packed lunch we took with us on the four-hour ride up to view the bizarre rock formations at a place called ‘Cardiff ‘.

For people who like wildlife, this is the place to be – it’s out there just wandering about! Apparently, a yearling bear was spotted outside the back of the lodge, while we were relaxing in our cabin, but it soon scarpered when disturbed. However, we did see coyotes from horseback, and mule deer and Canadian geese near the cabins. There were loons and duck on the lake, while the alfalfa meadows were positively humming with bees and butterflies.

Our stay at Elkin Creek was the first part of a fortnight’s adventure in British Columbia. We went on to have some pretty awesome experiences, including staying at the renowned Knight Inlet Lodge. I have to say, however, that the ranch experience topped them all. Apologies if this sounds too gushing but Elkin Creek offers that ideal combination: it’s a long way from the city but it has all the comforts of home (and you can stay in touch via satellite broadband). It’s a great place to recharge your batteries. So would I go back? You betcha!

Room Tip: The cabins nearer the lodge are more convenient and have the best views of the mountains.

An unforgettable memory for all the family. We were immersed into both nature and culture (cow boys and first nation). The accomodations are great (2 bathrooms which is great for a family), pretty, clean and very confortable the food is perfect and the staff is warm. Perfect for families. Plus we were lucky to be there during the Nemaiah Valley Rodeo (beginning of august).

Quite simply this is one of the nicest places on earth to spend some time. The natural beauty of the area is only improved by the totally bespoke service the team provide. We were here on honeymoon and they really raised the bar, nothing was too much effort.

We can't wait to return...

If you are debating weather or not to go to Elkin Creek Guest Ranch, think no more!!

The ranch is a little bit of a drive to get to but well worth it. Once you are there, you will be surrounded by some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. The drive itself was one of the highlights for us as we were fortunate enough to see some of the Wild Horses that call the Nemaiah Valley home.

The staff were all amazing, very warm, friendly, helpful and truly caring. Dave, Susy, Ian, Darcy and Roison all went above and beyond to make our stay very special.

We were greeted with such a warm welcome and were treated to incredibly good food, cozy cabins with amazing views and super comfy beds. Whenever we arrived in the main lodge after being outdoors, a crackling fire was always burning, fresh coffee, hot chocolate, drinks and snacks were waiting as well. Not to mention the three incredibly good meals prepared for us daily by the very talented Ranch Chef, Roison McVeigh.

We spent quite a lot of time around the beautiful herd of horses at the ranch. We went on a spectacular horseback ride along Vedan Lake with views of Tatlow Mountain in the distance. We were all matched with suitable horses for our varying degrees of riding experience and were fortunate enough to have the owner of the Ranch, Dave Milne guide us on our ride. He was helpful, informative and very knowledgeable of the area. Not to mention, incredibly patient with our very inquisitive eight year old son!!

Thanks for making our stay such a special one!!

Being very well travelled we are not easily impressed. However, Elkin Creek truly took our breath away ! It is located in a very remote but stunningly beautiful part of Canada, nestled amongst the mountains, forests and lakes, photographs will never ever do it justice. From the moment we arrived we felt like we’d been there forever and never wanted to leave.

The cabins are rustic but perfectly well equipped and the food was FANTASTIC, do not expect to lose weight !!! The staff were AMAZING and we will never forget some of the experiences and adventures we had together (Elkin Creek you know what we mean !).

There was a wide selection of horses for all riding abilities all of whom were all lovingly looked after. We were able to broaden our riding skills with the collecting and sorting of cattle from the mountains to barrel racing in the arena, we also had so much fun boating on the lake or soaking in the hot tub with a glass of wine. We couldn't even begin to list all the amazing wildlife experiences we had.

If you are considering visiting Elkin Creek do not hesitate a moment longer it will give you more time to save up for the second visit which I guarantee you’ll want to make when the first one comes to an end !

We had an amazing stay here last month as part of a grand tour of British Columbia. We loved the ranch, the cute log cabins, the amazing staff, the incredible food and relaxed and friendly vibe. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff whether it was entertaining our 7 year old son, choosing horses for a nervous beginner rider or spoiling us with amazing home-cooked food. The staff here all seem to love their jobs and this really shows in the care and dedication that goes into the way the whole place is run. We enjoyed fishing, swimming in the lake, canoeing, and of course the superb rides. We would love to visit again one day.
