We took a side trip from the Banff/Lake Louise area to run the exhilirating white water of the Kicking Horse River. Had a blast and would highly recommend this if you have most of day's time. We paid for the "half day" excursion, but that meant leaving Banff by 10:30am and not getting back until 5:00pm or so.
Most of the operators start in Golden, BC, meaning you have to drive for over an hour from Lake Louise to get there. The outfitters provide you with wetsuits to wear, which at first I didn't think i would want, since it was a 90 degree day, but the water is so cold that you really do need it.
The guides are fun and make it funner by sometimes taking you right over some of the big rocks, etc. The half day was plenty for me and my daughters, and they even give you the option to do an addtional section of the river, (for $50 more) but we declined.
At the end, they want to sell you photos/video (each guide wears a GoPro camera) but the photos were of all the rafts and didn't get very close, so we passed.
All in all, a very good time and worth it.
