I have stayed at this hotel several times over the past two years, most notably three times in March 2008.

Location: South off the Trans Canada Highway. The hotel is set back is what is a retail power area. Medicine Hat mall is across the highway and on the other side is Wal Mart, Home Depot and other big box stores. More retail outlets like a giant Canadian Tire are under construction behind the hotel.

Parking is free but the it gets crowded quickly. Handicapped parking spots are not closest to the hotel, for some reason. Areas of the parking lot need to be paved also.

Check-in: I always seem to be behind people when I get there. The front desk staff have keys ready for you when you arrive. I've been upgraded due to my Priority Club Gold membership but I l also think it was because there was a major hockey tournament in town and they needed the double queen bed suite that I had reserved. Also, if the hotel website is showing the hotel as full, still try calling the hotel for a room... I've managed to get a room even when it's been 'full'.

Rooms are very spacious, with mini fridges and microwaves. The beds are quite large, with plenty of pillows. High speed internet is free but try using the LAN connection vs the painfully slow wireless connection. I also think they haven't changed their password for access in the past 6 months --I know it was always the same during my numerous stays in late Feb and into the end of March.

My one major complaint about this hotel is the lack of sound proofing. There always seems to be some youth orientated sports tourney every time I'm here and I've been woken up by kids in the hallway at various times. Also, I could very clearly hear the TV set noise from the room beside me.

Restaurants: there is no restaurant in the hotel but continental breakfast is provided. The breakfast is better than a lot of Holiday Inn offerings I've had with plenty of breads, cereals, eggs, bacon, juice, coffee, etc. For restaurants, there are plenty near the mall or go to 13 Avenue SE. There is a very good Thai restaurant by Wal Mart also.

We really enjoyed our stay here. It is a new hotel, very clean and the spacious room easily accomadated our family of five. Kids and adults alike loved the waterslide, pool and hot tub. The continental breakfast was great, lots of selection and well stocked so nothing ever ran out. We would definately stay here again.

This property is targeted at the value-conscious traveller ...and hits the bull's eye, dead center. It is a new facility and so still in good condition. The staff is courteous and helpful. The work-out room is small but nicely appointed and all equipment is in good condition. The pool is nicely sized, properly heated, and flooded with natural light. The junior suites are spacious, and the beds and linens surpass expectations. The room included two TVs (overkill perhaps) and all the usual ‘suite’ amenities including microwave, coffee pot, iron, hairdryer, and fridge – all very clean and in excellent condition. The bathroom is likewise spacious and nicely adorned with granite counters, handsome tile floors, and a very satisfying shower head. The toilette tissue is of low grade, as are all the complimentary toiletries. The air conditioner in the room maintained a nice temp in the room, but it is a tad noisy. The view from our room (an interior suite) looked out over a small concrete courtyard in the centre of the hotel – not visually satisfying. Parking is close and ample. The hotel has no pub or restaurant within its walls but is in a great location: right off the highway and walking distance to Walmart, Home Depot, lots of stores, and a nice dinning district. On the subject of food, room rates include a free continental breakfast that greatly exceeds expectations – lots of fresh fruit, cereals, bagels, spreads, yogurt, coffees, juices, and sweets. The breakfast area is spacious and clean. The best thing about our stay is that we had the run of the hotel! Hardly a soul around.

In summary, we slept 4 people comfortably in the room (2 queen beds), got restful sleeps, goof’d around on the water slides for four hours at night and then another couple hours in the morning, ate like race horses at breakfast, and we only paid $138CAN with a CAA membership. That`s not a good deal ...it`s a great deal. We highly recommend this hotel and express our sincerest thanks to the staff for making us feel so welcome!

“No Hot Water!”

Holiday Inn Express and Suites Medicine Hat

Jan 6, 2007

My family and I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Medicine Hat on New Year's Eve. We were on our way to Banff so our stay was brief. We were told at booking that there were some problems with the pool--the temperature was only 75 degrees--very chilly for swimming at any time of year. Our initial impression of the hotel was that it was perfectly lovely. We have two teenage sons and the two queen beds and pull-out sofa perfectly accomodated us. We went down to the pool area and found not only the water but the entire area freezing cold. It was N.Y.'s Eve but there were only two very hardly souls in the pool. Back in our rooms, my husband went to take a shower around 10 pm. There was no hot water so he contacted the front desk. He was told that they were putting hot water into the pool and that there should be some in a while. The next morning he again attempted to have a shower and there was still no hot water (we'll assume they were again filling the pool or they simply have too small a boiler to meet the demands of the hotel). At check-out, we mentioned that there had not been hot water for showers either in the evening or in the am. We feel this is a pretty big deal but there was no offer of compensation in any way just a verbal apology. The solution to fill the pool with hot water clearly was not working as the pool area was still freezing and normal showering could not take place as a result of this "solution". As the hotel's physical accomodations are lovely, we would stay again only after being assured that this problem had been remedied. I realize that it was NY's Eve and children were hoping to swim but in an effort to fix this, patrons were literally left without hot water for showers. It seems to me that those trying to fix the pool problem were rather short-sighted in their problem solving.

“Totally Relaxed!”

Holiday Inn Express and Suites Medicine Hat

This hotel is just coming up 1 year old and its in beautiful condition. We found it spotless all over and some real thought was put into decorating the rooms. The housekeeping is excellant and the front desk staff is competent and friendly. There is a great pool and a water silde for the kids. The rooms have a small fridge and microwave. Although we didn't get a chance to try it, there is a free breakfast included.
We were only there for a weekend of shopping and it's definatel where we will stay the next time we go to the "Hat".
