An excellent little restaurant with great food and prices not too bad.
But so what.. Excellent little restaurants exist everywhere, and there’s a bunch of them in Jasper for sure.
But honest to goodness this place is very cool. - thanks to D.J. and his universe of wine and beer. For sure you’ll enjoy your meal at Syrah’s if you couldn’t care less about wine or beer, but, (to get the phrase correct) if you could care less - then hang on tight for what some other reviewer I think called “nirvana”.
Gotta love the absence of a wine list - a variety of great stuff, changing always, sits out on the counter and in the fridge for your browsing pleasure - at good prices.. I’ve seen some other reviews here where some found the absence of a wine list a bit of an irritant, but I have to say not me. This is not, to recall the old joke, a “no there isn't a menu - if you don’t see it on the bloody tablecloth we don’t have it” kind of place. It is, rather, a pretty classy place where you get to run around and pick up bottles, lower your reading glasses appropriately, read labels, study the bottles scientifically, provide really sophisticated and smart reactions and sounds and impress the other diners - kind of place. How fun is that! (I like to hold up two bottles at once, make my deepest frown, and determine the best one by weight).
Oh and I did I mention that if the counter and fridge-full of wines and beers don’t cut it for you, then you’re allowed to shuffle off the 25 feet to wine shop next door, also owned by D.J., and grab something there? And this wine and beer shop alone is worth the trip to Jasper (please believe me on that bit at least). Go there, check it out, and tell me if I’m lying. I’m writing anonymously anyway so good luck tracking me down.
If you catch D.J.,, (ask the waiter to give him a call if he’s not running in and out between the two shops - might work...), get him to take you down into the wine shop's lower cellar and maybe, if you’re good, to the "secret" storage room behind the padlock. Where, covered in dust, (the bottles, not you), you'll find some even rarer specimens. And get him talking. You might not agree with everything he says, but there’s a pretty good chance he’ll get you thinking.
What else can I say? - The wife (remember her from the title?) and I are crazy about the place. And, by the way, may I add that the wife, unlike me, (she’ll be happy to point out), really really knows her wines. So there you go.
Syrah’s in Jasper. A good restaurant if you’re not a wine fan, but a truly great one if you are.
