“Beautiful hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2012

The Athabasca hotel is beautiful, ornate and quiet. If you do not mind taking the stairs - there is no elevator - this is the place for you. It is very close to all of the stores, restaurants and booking agents. It has free parking out back and free wi-fi. We chose a room without a bathroom and it was not a problem going down the hall to use the shared accommodations. The hotel is kept very clean. Our only complaint is there is no air conditioning. We stayed 3 nights and for the most part the fan in the room and the window open was enough, but our last night it never cooled off. We were told that if the room was too hot to just open the door after 10:00 pm and it will help cool off the room. It did not and we ended up sleeping with our door open all night! I have stayed here in the past and will stay here in the future. The staff are friendly and helpful and the attached bar is quite nice - not too rowdy.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the back on the second floor iff possible. It is quiet and it is only one flight o...

“REALLY wanted to like this hotel but...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2012

We stayed here for 2 nights in July.
I enjoy staying in older, historic hotels (which is why I chose this one rather than another, such as the Best Western) and am used to putting up with some inconveniences for the sake of the "charm". However, as lovely as I thought this hotel was, my husband and I (and the other 2 couples we were traveling with) had the worst 2 nights of sleep on our whole 28 day motorcycle journey here.

The problems we had were with the lack of AC/inadequate fans coupled with the difficulty of keeping the windows open for fresh air all night due to the noise level from the street.

By "noise from the street" I don't mean traffic or even train sounds- but I'm referring to pedestrians into the wee wee hours talking, laughing, yelling at the top of their lungs as they presumably walked home from bars etc. Our impression (by the conversations we could clearly make out) was that many of these people were "locals". Perhaps some type of noise ordinance and enforcement is needed in the downtown area after midnight or 1AM. Seriously-- these people (two nights worth, well into 2AM-3AM) seem to be oblivious to the fact that there were sleeping people nearby. I would think that this would not be allowed in residential areas of the city. Even with the windows closed it was irritating (and also sweltering).

I would imagine that a wintertime visit could be different, without the need to have the windows open to relieve the heat, and perhaps with less late night carousing in the cold weather.

Room Tip: In summertime... ask for something facing the back street. It might possibly be quieter

“What happens at the Atha-B stays at the Atha-B”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2012

We had a great stay, 4 nights in late August. We arrived in town without any reservations, an especially dumb thing to do when the rodeo is in town but what the hell. We ended up with the 'Presidential' suite on the 3rd. floor because it was the only room available Saturday and Sunday nights - almost $400 CDN a night - ouch. The view was fantastic and it has a balcony so all the better. I stood out on the balcony and watched the drunks wander back into the town center from the rodeo - they were loud but I was quite snockered myself so who cared? We moved to the second floor for Monday and Tuesday and our rate dropped to $159 - much better than $400. Anyway, no A/C but the place has character, history, location, and a great view - not to mention a fantastic friendly bar. The locals call this place the Atha-B and we loved it - we will be back again.

Room Tip: Avoid the front side of the hotel which faces the street and park - the drunks can get quite loud le...

“Short stay in Jasper at the Athabasca Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2012

I was on my R&R leave in from the Kuwait (May of 2012) visiting my girlfriend in Alberta when we stayed at the Athabasca Hotel in Jasper. We went up to Jasper to do some hiking in the mountains and just to get out into nature. We chose the Athabasca because we planned on staying for 3 days and wanted a location that was central in Jasper that allowed us to hop in the car and go check out trails, but also letting us walk to a restaurant to eat dinner in the evening. The Athabasca has some historic charm to it, an older building but I found it to have a really nostalgic feel. The rooms are pretty standard, but are clean and cozy. If you choose to stay here be sure to get a room with private bathroom unless you want to utilize the community bathroom/shower, unless of course you don't mind and want to save a few bucks. Also the hotel has a restaurant and bar/lounge on the first floor. We did not eat at the hotel, but did use the bar for a nightcap before heading off to bed. I would say that if you want a pretty relaxing environment and don't plan on staying for more than a few days. This is the place to be.

Room Tip: I would get a room with a private bathroom, other than that look for a room that overlooks the town...
