“Perfect location!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2005

After reading other reviews on the web we made sure to arrive at the hotel just after 5pm, so we could have dinner before the cafeteria closes at 6. For around $10 per meal we got a generous serving of chinese food, which was actually quite tasty. We later checked the menu at the restaurant, and noticed that our meals would have been at least twice as expensive there. Our room was quite spacious (with a loft), well maintained and clean. Considering the perfect location, rooms are certainly a bargain during off-season, although the rate does not include breakfast. So bring some muffins, otherwise you are stuck with the overpriced restaurant as the cafeteria is not open for for breakfast.

Enormous room, with high ceiling, queen bed, sofa, two armchairs, and stairs leading to a loft with two single beds. Lovely bathroom with good-quality toiletries. It's a shame the Icefield is the only nearby attraction as I would have loved to spend more than just one night!

Pay the extra for a glacier view room - the view of the Athabasca Glacier, just across the road, is magnificent.

Dining options consist of a cafe and a restaurant. The restaurant is fairly expensive but excellent, with panoramic views of the Rockies. It offers a Canadian and a Chinese menu.

Our only problem was an intermittent but loud buzzing sound from the corridor every few minutes, which kept my partner up half the night. Not sure if the culprit was the lift or drinks machine, but it would be worth asking for a room at the other end of the corridor.

We stayed at the icefield chalet for 2 nights. It was a great central location between Banff and Jasper. We had a beautiful view of the glacier and were able to get an early start on the icefield tour that morning before the crowds arrived. (they get up to 4,000 per day)

Avoid the restaurant at all cost. Very overpriced, small portions, poor service and food with no flavor. they have no competition and it is obvious that they know it. Eat at the crossings about 45 minutes south instead or use the cafeteria before it closes at 6 PM.

Even better than the icefield tour is a hike to Parker's Ridge about 1/2 hour south which gives you a fabulous view of mountains and glaciers.
