“Excellent stay at Glacier View Inn”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2012

If you want to spend some time at the Columbia Icefields this is the place to stay. The views from the room of the glacier itself were stunning. The room itself was excellent, with a queen on the lower level and two twins in the loft. The food service at the attached restaurant was average at best, and there are no other options within many, many miles of the place, but that is a small price to pay especially if you are staying for only a night. The cost of the hotel was very reasonable when we were there in late September. If you luck out and stay there on a clear night as we did can see more stars then I ever had before.

Room Tip: Make sure you book a glacier view room and not a mountain view room.

We had a room with a mountain view and it was worth it, the rooms didn't have fridges and they had an ice machine that didn't produce much ice, I feel if your not going to have fridges at least have a proper ice machine. Everything is very expensive here from the food at the eating establishments and the vending machines. It was worth the experience once would only do it again if they made it more user friendly with proper luggage drop off and amenities in your room.

Room Tip: Mountain View

We managed to get a discount by asking at reception but still this place was pricey. It kinda felt like a shopping mall with reception in the visitors centre and all rooms on the 3rd floor.
The room we had was nice, on two levels but be warned it can get very warm on second level. The decor is a bit old but the view of the glacier was fantastic.
The low point was the restaurant, the waiter was really friendly but the food was really poor and so overpriced. My partner had the halibut which had a spicy topping that overpowered the fish. The pulled pork bun and a horrible Caesar salad for close to 20 was painful. We decided to skip breakfast based on the dinner experience. I also didn't like the way they automatically add 15% to all bills.

The only thing this place has going for it is the view. The room is over-priced, ate at the cafeteria and a hot dog with poutine were over $15, didn't even want to try the restaurant so went to bed early and made an early start in the morning. Expected that they would have beautiful large windows with which to view the Glacier but were so small only one chair would fit in front of it. Definitely stop at the Icefield's Interpretation center but pass on the accommodation. It should have been a huge red flag when I made the booking and no cancellations are allowed, overpaid for a sub par Super 8 room.

Room Tip: Don't book here if you want a Quiet stay.

All hotels or motels need more single or bunk beds!!

The loft room on the Glacier Viewing side was fabulous!! It was a really treat to visit the ice fields and to stay for the one night. The hotel was very clean and there was friendly staff for the hotel.

The staff for the reservation and icefield tour reservation desk were not friendly. You felt like they could not wait to get rid of you. The hotel is fabulous,,,, but I am not sure about the rest of centre. The food at the centre was expensive and very basic. There was no real staff service. The view and the lovely room were the only reason to stay.

Also hotel guests should be able to book their icefield bus tour tickets without standing in another line. It should be a service provided for staying the night at the icefields. Guests of the hotel should NOT be turned away from the reservation desk at 5:55pm and told it is too late to buy tickets for the next morning. The next morning, we were told that the 1st bus would not be leaving until 9:30am instead of 9am, due to drive problems. We did not feel very special as hotel guests. There are only 32 guest rooms in the hotel,,, it should NOT be hard to make us feel like we are welcomed to stay the night.

If Brewster tours are trying to build another another tourist trap/attraction in Jasper,,, maybe they should greatly improve the attractions they already have first!!

Room Tip: Ask for Glacier View side.

After an highly annoying car meltdown, almost anyway, we hiked the road from the glacier to the exceptionally helpful girls in the visitor centre helpdesk who were fantastic & pointed us in the direction of the hotel upstairs which when you're stuck in the middle of nowhere is a great help to find. Given a discount by the hotel for our situation which was really kind of them, we settled in for a night in a room which was just what we needed, a bed each & chance to rest whilst we waited on news of our car. Aside from the rooms having only 2 cups for tea/cofee and there being 4 adults there, we were very happy with the stay. The food in the restaurant was good if a little pricey but when you're the only option for a good hour or so each way then it's not surprising. Only negatives were in the visitor centre cafe where after buying a microwave meal my sister in law was accused of not paying for it when she took it back in to cook it and the washrooms used by the tourists in the centre, many of whom need target practice.

The location is what you are getting in this hotel experience. The windows look out directly over Athabasca and Snow Dome glaciers and of course Mts Athabasca, Andromeda and Snow Dome. The hotel is directly above the tourist centre where you have the gift shop, buy tickets and eat at the dining room of cafe. Rooms are spacious and clean but, as you would imagine in a remote location, spartan. No problem though as you can get up at dawn and walk to the glacier. Spectacular! This is the way to do the glacier if you have a few spare dollars.
