very good cabins, staff extremly helpful but food & drink very expensive due to the fact there were no grocers or liquor stores on site other than the resort resturant therefore you were a captive audience so to speak, but apart from that brilliant

I stayed at this place with my family during Last week of May. Weather was perfect. The location of it is great. Sunwapta falls is 2 minutes drive from this place. You may spot bears near this place. Staff is good. Room was clean. Make sure you carry enough water bottles as they water in the tap has strange color and odor. However don't expect to get any cell phone reception there. I tried bell and telus and it didn't work. Internet is very weak. So rooms that are farther from the main building doesn't get wifi reception at all as they get internet via satellite. Overall very peaceful and clean place to stay overnight.

Room Tip: Carry water bottles. Cell phone won't work. Internet very weak.

I stayed here with my wife and her parents. My wife and I were cycling from Jasper to Banff. The parental units were driving a support car. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The rooms were basic and had a charming dated Rocky Mountain ambiance and decor that I fondly remembered from my youth. This may not be to some folks taste, but it fit the location, and everything was in good repair. The rooms were comfortable and we enjoyed sitting out on the veranda in the evening.

I rented a mountain bike (a Norco hard tail of some kind) for a couple of hours and took a quick blast out to a spot they recommended called "Big Bend" past the Falls. It was a 15km roundtrip and except right at the Falls I saw no one on the trail at all. There's a lovely backcountry camping spot at Big Bend, which, unsurprisingly, is at a big bend in the Athabaska river.

The food in the restaurant was good and the service was excellent. Despite being right alongside the Icefield Parkway it feels remote, rustic, and welcoming. I also recall the price being quite reasonable. It was my favourite stopping place during this trip.

We stopped by at Sunwapta Falls Resort overnight on our way to Jasper from Banff. The resort is very well located directly off the highway. The staff was very friendly and gave us good tips about places to visit in the vicinity. We asked for a microwave and it was promptly delivered to our room.

The room was clean and well maintained, albeit a little small. The fixtures in the room were old, nevertheless, they were clean.

It can take a little bit of walking to tow one's luggage over to the room, but it is a resort type set up, so that's expected.

Overall, a nice stay on a very memorable trip!

Hi N P!

Thanks for taking the time to review your stay from last September. September is a beautiful time to come to the Canadian Rockies and one of my favourite times of the year. I’m glad to see you enjoyed our location and that our team delivered a great experience for you two!

I’d like to take a moment to expand on a few of your comments for the benefit of the readers who are considering our property.

LOCATION:
Sunwapta is 53k south of downtown Jasper and 50km north of the famous Columbia Icefields (and new Skywalk). We are on the west side of the Icefields Parkway (HWY 93). As the Parkway is a sightseeing highway it is very quiet from about 8pm onwards even in peak season.

The location is ideal for people looking to be in the heart of a completely natural environment. There is little to distract from your enjoyment of nature and connecting with the loved ones you are travelling with. It’s a short stroll to the falls and we have several hikes around us. Our location gives us the means to provide an intimate, authentic Rocky Mountain ambience.

If you have any questions about our location and what it might mean for you, please reach out to us! 1-888-828-5777 / info@sunwapta.com and @SunwaptaFalls on social channels.

While we are in a rustic spot, outside of location, service and food are the next most highly rated parts of past clients’ stays.

WHAT TO DO IN THE AREA?
We have tones and tones of ideas and our staff is always happy to help you plan your time in Jasper and along the Icefields Parkway. We have 3 individual self drive itineraries available at request. Each one represents a full day of sightseeing in Jasper National Park. We also act as a booking agent for all the areas activities so we can put together a full vacation plan right from the front desk.

In short, let us fill your mind with some ideas, and you can pick and choose. Then, we can help you map out your time, leaving you with more free time to enjoy the sights, fun and loved ones.

ROOM SIZE:
Here are the approximate sizes of our most readily bookable room types:
Hideaway: Cabin style room, one queen bed, full private bath, stone wood-burning fireplace (free wood and service with room): 210 sq ft.
Rocky Mountain Double: Cabin style room, 2 double beds, full private bath, individual deck. 250 sq ft.
Sunwapta Lodge Room: Lodge room with outdoor entrance, 2 Double beds, full private bath, large shared veranda. 210 sq ft.

No matter how you book your room with us, I always highly encourage readers to contact us directly first. This gives you the opportunity to get the most clarity about what we have to offer and all you to make the best choice for you! We are a small independent hotel, so you actually talk to us. First hand real info :)

Contact us: 1-888-828-5777 / info@sunwapta.com and @SunwaptaFalls on social channels.

PROPERTY LAYOUT:
Later this spring we will relaunch our website which will include a map of the property. This will give you an idea of the orientation of rooms!

Thanks again N P! Much appreciated and we hope we see you again in the future!

Probably your decision will be by the location of this place. The service is good, the restaurant is expensive due to you don't have restaurants options near there. The cottage has a good size but it smells musty. The fall is just one minute by car, it is a beautiful place but not spectacular.

Room Tip: You should choose, the cottage further of the highway.

Hi Andrewstrip!

First of all, thank you so much for choosing to stay at Sunwapta during your time in Jasper! Thanks too for reviewing our lodge and we hope you have had the opportunity to review some of the amazing activities and sightseeing spots Jasper has to offer.
Andrew, if there is anything additional you would like to share about your stay please feel free to contact me directly: matthew@sunwapta.com. I greatly value your input!

For the benefit of the readers, I’d like to take a moment and expand on the points Andrewstrip has raised. I’m pretty passionate about Jasper… so sometimes I write at length. However, you can simply scan to the HEADINGS for any relevant section you’d like to read :)

Readers, if you have any specific questions for us, please reach out. We’re available by phone, email, Twitter, or Facebook! 1-888-828-5777 / info@sunwapta.com and @SunwaptaFalls on social channels.

LOCATION:
From our statistics, I can say that Andrewstrip is exactly right! Over 80% of people that choose to stay at Sunwapta choose us for our location. The reason ‘location’ is important varies a little for different traveller types.

For most our location fulfills the dream they have of being in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, surrounded by pure untouched nature (but without camping). Being located 53km south of downtown Jasper on the incredible Icefields Parkway is a huge privilege. I encourage readers to take a look at the pictures on TripAdvisor or to visit our Facebook page, Instagram, or YouTube channel for images and raw footage.

Let me describe it from an experience perspective: At Sunwapta, you wake up in the morning and step outside your lodge or cabin style room, nestled in thick pine forests, to gaze upon the peaks of the Endless Chain Ridge. After joining us for breakfast in our historic lodge, you might take a wonder down to the falls, taking in incredible views of the Catacomb Mountains and the dramatic Dragon Peak along the way. The Falls themselves are spectacular with an optional easy-grade walk to additional sets of lower falls. For guests looking to stretch their legs a little more, there are several local trails and short bike rides (we rent bikes at the front desk!) to lakes and less travelled locations like Big Bend (a 6km bike ride from the falls). In the evenings, the scent of wood fires fills the air and with the quiet of night you can hear the roar of the falls in the distance. On dark and clear evenings (spring and fall), taking a stroll to the falls after dinner reveals the breathtaking magnificence of the night sky. With almost no light pollution you will be amazed by a dazzling light show that matches the awe inspiring beauty of the mountains.

Aside from the intimate and unplugged ambience, our location is also convenient for many travellers. For most, being that much closer to the Columbia Icefields and the new SkyWalk for example is a great benefit to help beat the mid-day rush at those highly popular sites. For travellers flying back home from Calgary, our location gives them a bit of a head-start on the day. For others, it’s the proximity to the Sunwapta Falls, Athabasca Falls, Goat Viewpoint, Mt Edith Cavell, the local lakes and many other viewpoints and animal sightseeing hotspots.

There is a lot to see and do in Jasper National Park. There’s the ‘hits’ and then there are the more subtle attractions and hikes. Reach out, and we’ll be happy to help you start planning. Whether you stay with us or elsewhere, or a mix of the two, we highly recommend at least 3 or 4 nights in Jasper! Start planning your vacation:1-888-828-5777 / info@sunwapta.com and @SunwaptaFalls on social channels.

Service
While most choose us for location, service and food are the highest rated aspects in reviews across all platforms. You will find the service at Sunwapta to be unpretentious, highly caring, genuine and committed. It has been described as ‘Disney Like’. Whether we’re filling your mind with ideas for your vacation in Jasper, helping you keep your co-travellers entertained and happy with customized daily itineraries, or booking activities for you right from our front desk, you will find a friendly internatinoal staff ready to share experiences and tips. We’re all passionate about Jasper, and the happiness we feel comes across in how delighted we are to help in any way we can.

Because Sunwapta is located outside of downtown Jasper, most of us live on property. This means that you also have the opportunity to speak directly with a senior manager anytime of the day, 24/7. Most importantly however, is that our service begins before you arrive. Reach out to us with questions, ideas, queries, advice any time!

Food!
The Sunwapta Restaurant has a couple of listings on TripAdvisor (created by users). I encourage everyone to take a browse. The restaurant joined our hotel in winning the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence. The restaurant has a few distinct services: breakfast with a committed breakfast room for in-house guests, lunch services (mostly catering to travellers while our guests are out sightseeing), and absolutely stunning evening dining with priority given to guests.

I can assure you and Andrewstrip that our pricing is absolutely in keeping with the area and with industry practices. We guarantee value for the price and a restaurant manager is always available should you feel your meal is not up to standard. However, you will find that the restaurant continues the same service as our hotel with exceptional quality to back it up. We’ve even had guests return year after year just for the evening dining. It is that good.

We are wholly committed to providing exceptional experiences, so price gouging doesn’t fit in with who we are and what we seek to provide for guests. ‘Expensive’ can be a subjective word, so for readers who are curious, please visit the restaurant section of our website where you will find our 2014 menus and pricing. We offer fine dining in the evening from 630pm onward. Up until 6pm there are casual items available in our deli from burgers to soups, stews, sandwiches, all made fresh daily. In addition to the menus posted on our website we have vegetarian and gluten free options available at all times.

For those who have any questions regarding our restaurant and services at Sunwapta, just give us a call or email us in advance! We will make sure to get you all the info you need to make the right decision! Also, if you are staying with us between June 1 and Sept 21, be sure to make dining reservations in advance! Reach out today: 1-888-828-5777 / info@sunwapta.com and @SunwaptaFalls on social channels.

Thanks again Andrewstrip! Readers, we hope to see you in 2015!

This was the surprise of our holiday. We expected average accommodation and food here but were very pleasantly surprised
This lodge is very well situated for many of the walks and hikes along the parkway. The staff give great personal advice on where to hike and provide excellent maps and trail descriptions. These were emailed to us to prepare for our visit and additional copies given to us when we arrived. The Australian receptionist went out of her way to be helpful.

The accommodation is rustic, clean and spacious. We had cabin 5A which was spacious with a comfortable bed, coffee maker, TV, fridge, fan, ensuite bathroom, open log fire, WiFi, and table and chairs. It was very warm when we arrived but cooled off well in the early evening.

Dinner and breakfast were a very pleasant surprise. Good variety, well cooked and served by very pleasant young staff from England.

We are not big shoppers but found some cute little souvenirs & books here for our grandchildren.

The Sunwapta Falls are nearby for a pleasant walk.

Room Tip: 5A was on the edge of the woods very quiet with parking nearby.

Hi 270Loch!

Thanks so much for taking time to review our Rocky Mountain Lodge and for choosing to stay with us. It’s a pleasure to hear that we exceeded expectations! We’re always happy to receive reviews on TripAdvisor, especially from well travelled and Top Contributors on TripAdvsor, so thank you again.

For the readers, just a few points to elaborate on for your benefit.

Rooms
Room 5A is a ‘Hideaway’ room. This particular hideaway has one king bed and a private wood burning fireplace. It is one of my favourites as the view out the window is pure forest. You really have the feeling of being in a cabin in the woods… which is where you are!

We have larger rooms with 2 doubles and a few suites available as well.

To book a particular room, the best way is to contact us directly. If you prefer to book over a specific OTA like booking.com or expedia.com, you can try requesting it in your notes. If you book with a traditional travel agent, please ask them to reach out to us to request.

Reach out to us directly: 1-888-828-5777 / info@sunwapta.com and @SunwaptaFalls on social channels.

Room Size:
All of our rooms are single room hotel rooms. Our Hideaway rooms are about 215 square feet; The Rocky Mountain Double comes in around 250 square feet and our Lodge rooms (also with 2 doubles and a deck) come in at 210 square feet.

We have lots of candid pictures of our main room types on our Facebook page in an album called 'candid pictures', most of which I've loaded on TripAdvisor as well.

Things to do!
Our specialty is helping guests plan their vacation time in Jasper. Not everyone is looking for the same kind of experience, but everyone is looking to make that special connection with nature in their own unique way. We’re passionate about the value of that connection and would like the opportunity to help you out if we can! As we did with 270Loch, we can start by emailing you some self drive itineraries in advance, and are available by phone, email and social media channels as well.

Dining:
I’ll let 270Loch’s words stand! However, if you are interested, please check out our Sunwapta Restaurant and Endless Chain Ridge Dining room on TripAdvisor. You will also find our 2014 menus and pricing on the restaurant page of our website. Keep in mind these will change slightly for 2015 and we will update them once our menus and pricing is finalized in early spring.

Don’t forget to make dining reservations in advance especially if you are visiting between June 1 and Sept 30! 1-888-828-5777 / info@sunwapta.com

Thanks again Loch270. Australia is an enviable place to be this time of year for Canadians! We hope to see you again despite the long distance:)
