“Great place, location & staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2012

Firstly the staff here were super friendly and helpful, and the food at the restaurant was excellent. I had the best chicken curry soup that i've ever had in my life! I'd like to personally thank the chef, it was amazing and would you like to send me the recipe?? :-) we enjoyed all the meals we had there and had a lovely chat with a few of the staff at the bar.

We had a room at the back that looked into the forrest, which was nice and peaceful. Would have been nice sitting out there but the mozzies were dreadful! Make sure you have plenty of bug spray - but this goes for most of alberta in the summer as the ponds of melted snow create massive breeding grounds for the suckers!

Our room was cozy, The wifi is a bit dodgy as they get it via satellite, but other than that we had a great stay overall. They have a little shop in between reception and the restaurant which had plenty of great things to browse/purchase. I'm not into buying trinkets, but they did have some lovely things.

This is a great place to stop on a trip along the icefields parkway and get out to see sunwapta falls.

Room Tip: I did not see other rooms, but i thought ours at the back of the lodges facing the forest was a grea...

Dear Penpen5!

Thank you for this great New Years surprise! For the readers: just to clarify, we are closed from the middle of October to the middle of May each year, so this was a great New Years gift to receive a positive review in the middle of winter!

WIFI:
Let's start with the weak point: WiFi. It's true, our WiFi is fed by a satellite internet provider. For those unfamiliar with satellite internet, in the mountains its strength and consistency can vary dramatically for many reasons outside of our control. Luckily we provide it for free. Perhaps more luckily, we are surrounded by some of the most dramatically beautiful scenery in the Canadian Rockies. We'll be happy to find ways to keep you distracted from internet distractions :). That said, we do have dial up available for those emergency situations of business communications that just can't wait.

BUGS!
The mosquitos in 2012 were the worst we've seen in many many years. Penpen caught the beginning of the cycle in late June. Do bring bug spray, because as Penpen has noted, that snow pack and wet conditions when the heat comes on really provides the ideal conditions for a breeding ground! Believe it or not, but the additional 1000ft elevation of Sunwapta over the town of Jasper means there are less mosquitos at Sunwapta! Still... they were nasty!

What you can expect for your Sunwapta Experience!
As Penpen has intimated, you will most certainly find one thing absolutely consistent at Sunwapta: us! Your holiday, your vacation, your getaway is our priority and we are here to help you have an outstanding experience in Jasper National Park. We are passionate about the National Park and the kind of transformational experiences you can have in such a beautiful, natural surrounding.

Let us know if you need help with your plans BEFORE you come to Jasper, and we'll get started today on custom itineraries for your visit with us. Or, if you like, take a browse on our website where you will find 3 self-drive itineraries, each of which represents one full day of sightseeing in the National Park. These will start to give you ideas about how we can help you. Don't forget, we are also a booking agent for all of the activities in Jasper, so everything can be done right from our front desk.

We strive for total transparency here at Sunwapta so your pre-arrival expectations are in line with what we offer! Please feel free to email or call us! Also, on Facebook, you will find candid pictures of our rooms taken by yours truly (not a professional photographer). Also, join us on YouTube as Sunwapta Heidy takes you to some of the great wonders of the Park!

FOOD :P
The only thing better than us is our food. Penpen... Executive chef Leger says he'd love to oblige... but you might have to wait for his book! The evening dining is not to be missed. While you can find fall 2012's menu on our dining page on our website, 2013 holds some new items that have got us pretty excited! Stay tuned for our exciting 2013 events by revisiting our site this May or by joining us on Facebook at Sunwapta Falls Resort. Our restaurant provides sit down breakfasts and dinners as well as lunches to go, and a cafe during the day. You can find sample menus and prices right on the dining page of our website.

Rooms and Views:
As noted in other responses to reviews, we have about 15 rooms that face directly into forest. If you prefer this kind of experience you must contact us directly to confirm the room. You may still book via your favourite online travel agent, travel agent or directly with us, but please drop us an email to confirm one is available for you first.

Thanks again Penpen, and a very Happy New Year to all of the TripAdvisor community!

Good place to stay - interesting site and good chalet room, very good restaurant and friendly helpful staff. Well positioned at north end of Parkway and much better than staying in Jasper (which you can visit anyway) and to see the nearby sights. Would stay again.

The Lodge is right next to Sunwapta Falls (1km) and along the Icefield's Parkway. You are surrounded by the most beautiful scenery of mountains. Staff is extremely friendly. Cabins have had their good times already and ours was quite small, but ok - the fireplace made up for it. There is no microwave or cooking facilities in the room and just one restaurant attached that we thought to be a bit expensive. I would recommend to stay in this lodge only if you mean to go on to Banff the next day as driving back to Jasper is quite a trip. We didn't mind though doing so as driving along the Icefield's Parkway is definitely one of the most beautiful streets I've ever been on to.

Room Tip: Get one with fireplace as even in summer it can snow in this part of Candada!

Stayed in a Sunwapta 2 bedroom suite. Huge rooms smell from the wood-burning fire-places in the rooms. Bed linen is old and torn in places. Bathrooms are small but functional.
The on-site restaurant is however completely worth the stay. Advance reservations are a requirement. Every dish was a gastronomical masterpiece that required ample preparation time.

The room was in need of some major updates and the blinds were filthy. The only place to get any food is the attached restaurant and they were putting on a buffet for $39 a plate. For that kind of money we were naturally expecting a high quality meal but what we got instead was a few cold salads (had to ask for any dressing), inedible turkey and cold supermarket ham at the carvery.Such a huge price tag for such cheap, poor food. We felt totally ripped off. Better drive on and avoid this place.

Dear Tsawtravel,

Thanks for taking the time to leave your review on TripAdvisor and for challenging us to the higher level of service and care we normally provide. We are all very sorry that you did not receive the care, quality, value and service we are so highly rated on TripAdvisor for.

It is difficult for me to repair a negative experience after it has occurred, so I would first like to apologize that I was not made aware of the situation immediately. I am confident that our usual level of care and conscientious consideration of our guests' needs would have come across.

There is no doubt we could have worked out a meal option for you that would have been exceptional, and fit into your price expectations. We generally receive high ratings for our evening dining, so your review was quite disheartening. Our Restaurant Manager extends his apologies and we are happy to refund your food and beverage charges.

While we are a 4 circle rating on TripAdvisor, we are a 2 star hotel. Our rooms are basic, however, they are normally exceptionally clean. Our rooms are inspected annually by AAA and the AHLA (Alberta Hotel and Lodging Association) and we have received the AHLA award for housekeeping practices for decades running. The comfort and cleanliness of our rooms are usually highly rated.

Again, it is so unfortunately that I was not made aware of your situation at the time as I would have been more than happy to arrange another room for you, or at least to have it re-done to our usual standards while you joined us for dinner.

Overall Tsawtravel, I feel that we really didn't make our usual caring connection with you and if we would have I believe your experience would have been substantially different. In lieu, if you felt that you wasted your good money here, I would like to make sure you get your good money back. I hope you can take an offer of compensation as a sign that we care, we're sorry, and if you have a chance to come back, we'd love another shot!

Please email me directly at: matthew@sunwapta.com.

Thanks again Tsawtravel!

The lodge is over 20 miles from Jasper but great place to spend a couple of nights. The cabins are quaint with a fireplace but the chairs are not too comfortable. The personnel were fantastic, helpful, and friendly.
The location worked out perfect for us. We made it there mid afternoon from Banff and had time to visit Sunwapta Falls. Next day we went to Athabasca Falls and on to Jasper and took the Maligne Lake boat trip which was beautiful. Then after leaving the Lodge we went to the Columbia Ice Field.
Don't forget to visit Patricia Lake while in Jasper. A great surprise in scenery and picture taking - a favorite spot for artists.
Although the restaurant was a bit expensive it was one of the best meals we had on our trip. Highly recommend eating there (although it is the only place around).

Found this place as we wanted somewhere to stay between Lake Louise and Jasper from where to explore the Glaciers.
Slightly expensive restaurant prices, but this is the only place for miles around! Good motel accommodation - dodgy Wifi, but again that's the location!
Sunwapta falls are amazing.

Room Tip: Good position to break journey between Jasper and Lake Louise
