Because we enjoyed our trip the summer before, my hiking club returned for a second visit in July, 2012. A few problems this time, though;
First, the spot where we'd camped the year before hadn't been mowed, which mean that the mosquitoes were prolific. Other than that, the location itself was still quite nice.
However, when we arrived, we were told that we would be sharing the grounds with a 'youth group', which had booked the entire lodge. Judging from their demeanor and their language, and the numerous motivations posters, it seems that they were in fact a bunch of juvenile delinquents sent there for an outdoor rehabilitation program.
The first evening, one of the owners came by asking us to keep any liquor concealed from passing kids, and to keep the conversations quiet so they wouldn't think we were having a party. There was some laughter and lively conversation going on, although nothing untoward or excessive, but we went to bed early and left the next morning for our hikes.
When we returned, though, we were told that one of the people running the course had found our visits to the indoor washrooms in the lodge (main floor just past the lobby) to be too distracting, and we were asked to use either a battered old outhouse out in the bush, or to make a trek to the backside of the building and down a dark set of stairs to an old basement suite to use the toilet there.
On my review of our first visit, I commented that we felt like we were being treated as well as the guests renting rooms - this time, I would have to say that our reception was less than pleasant. We felt like we were unwelcome intruders instead of welcome guests.
While I can respect the owners' need to keep the more lucrative government clients happy, it was unfair to penalize us for their whims. To their credit, we received a reduced rate for camping on the second night, but that didn't compensate for the inconvenience and the ill-feelings we were left with at the end of the weekend.
Will we ever go back? No.
Do not book when the kids groups are there! Before making a reservation, call to make sure you won...
