“Extremely disappointed.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2010

We were really looking forward to our stay at the Matrix last weekend. Check in went smoothly and we were very impressed with the decor and feel of the hotel. Unfortunately we had serious problems with the room temperatures, the remotes, and the wifi.

We asked the front desk if they could adjust the heat down in our room as it was hovering around 23 degrees C and the thermostat did not appear to be working. They advised us to open a window (not possible, all were secured shut). They sent up a fan for us, but just left it in the room without plugging it in. We had to move the bed to find an outlet to use in the bedroom, plugged the fan in...and it didn't work. Neither did the wi-fi connections or the TV remotes. They moved us to another room but all 3 problems recurred...apparently in the winter the rooms cannot be cooled, you just take what you get which was far too warm and stuffy for us. We considered leaving to find another hotel at 9pm but thought we would make the best of it. Only to be woken up an hour later by 6 eight year old boys in full soccer uniforms playing soccer in the hall outside our room.

The worst part is, when we told the front desk staff at checkout that we did not enjoy our stay and would likely not return, they were mildly apologetic but basically just shrugged and said that since we had prepaid for our room through Expedia they could not adjust the rate.

The Matrix reminded me of a shiny red apple that looks so appetizing and juicy but when you bite into it, it is mealy and bitter. Very misleading.

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to bring to our attention the issues you encountered during your stay with us. During the transition from winter to spring we have encountered a bit of a challenge keeping the building at a constant temperature. We have now rectified the situation with our heating/cooling system. As well, the windows in all guestrooms are fully operational to allow fresh air to enter. Certainly when the fan was brought to your room it should have been plugged in under the desk and turned on, so the room was cooler when you returned. I do apologize that we did not take care of this for you. With respect to our television and satellite system, we have been experiencing outages with our service provider and they have worked diligently to have this problem fixed.

Lastly, I would like to apologize for the lack of consideration you encountered at check out. This has been addressed with our front office team. I would like to invite you back to be our Guest again, to show you that we can exceed your expectations. Please contact me directly to take care of your reservation.

Yours truly,
Sharon Long

I have stayed at this hotel twice, the first time, the stay was pretty fantastic, but the second time I ran into some snags.
We checked into the hotel at around 6:00pm, and were notified that our room was NOT ready (It was Valentine's day and they were busy). They were very apologetic, and sent us up to the lounge to enjoy the wine tasting that was going on. The wine tasting was very nice, though it was almost an hour until our room was ready. As an added bonus, they discounted the rate which was nice.
The hotel itself is very beautiful. The decor is modern, and the rooms are well-appointed and comfortable. I love the beds!
If I had one complaint about the rooms it would be the bathroom doors, and the fact that they do not latch shut, but just slide over.
Unfortunately that night there were some people getting very rowdy and causing a disturbance in the hall ways at about 4am. Within minutes the police were there, and I believe the tenants were all kicked out. I was happy to see that the situation was handled so quickly and efficiently! Great job.. I will stay again for sure.

This hotel is in downtown Edmonton, one block from trendy Jasper Avenue. Directly across the street from my meeting, easy walking distance to upscale shopping, and the new Alberta Gallery of Art. Beautifully appointed in modern contemporary design, marvelous food, wine and knowledgable staff, make this hotel a definite must.

The hotel's decor, staff, room comfort level, service and cleanliness is impeccable! The rooms were extremely comfortable yet sleek and the technology was great. I look forward to staying again! The one comment is that the bathroom doors "slide" closed but are not within the doorframe (they are on the outside) so there is not technically a door that closes and locks. This surely won't affect most travelers and you do still have privacy.

We stayed for one night, a Saturday, on a business trip. The service was excellent, as was the room.

There was a party on our floor until the early hours. I should have called front desk but didn't always assuming it would end soon.

When I mentioned it on check out the hotel went out of its way to satisfy me, though it it didn't need to. Though this didn't make up for the lack of sleep it does mean that I was not unhappy in my dealings with the hotel.

I would definitely return. The only thing they could have done, to stop this happening again, is have security roam the floors after midnight to close down partiers. But even that is difficult if those people are in rooms intermittently roaming to friends rooms.

Clean and modern looking! We've stayed there a couple of times and it has been consistantly enjoyable! The set-up of the rooms catered to our stay perfectly. The location is great (even though driving downtown isn't easy sometimes) and we would definately stay there again!!

Fantastic hotel for the price. Has satellite HDTV, high speed internet, breakfast. Great location in center of Edmonton. I arrived from airport on Sunday when most shops were closed, so I hoped they give away matches or lighters in rooms. But very few hotels do it anymore. I did not ask for room for smoker, but I think its impossible to get a smoker room in most hotels this years. The hotel workers are very friendly and polite. Its was my best stay out of 3 recent visits to Edmonton.
