Our 7th wedding anniversary we decided to splurge and try this place. Located near downtown amongst the government offices attached to The Matrix Hotel which itself is a nice boutique hotel and Starbucks beside it.
These three venues make you feel you are in an upscale atmosphere and The Wildflower Grill did not disappoint!
Going to dinner early at this restaurant after seeing their menu on the website, its a simple decision.
Our friendly host greeted us immediately and seated us near the kitchen in a nice little booth that is just enough for two people. I never knew they would actually maximize the space of the restaurant to do this. Amazing. The decor of the restaurant was modern, but yet has some classic elements to it which works really well. Our friendly server came to our table and greeted us, and also served us ice cold water already.
Wow, efficient and we don't feel one bit of "uptightness/snobby" atmosphere. Other places that we been to that are upscale like this have servers that do not serve you water right away until you order them. To make you feel bad, they will offer you your choice of tap water or bottled water in a condescending manner. To our server here at Wildflower Grill, you are genuinely amazing, thank you.
The menu of starters, soup, salads and entrees are small but its carefully selected to please the palette. Their wine list is three pages and using font size 9 so can you imagine how much wine is available! They are also displayed behind glass in the restaurant.
We are not wine drinkers so we just ordered organic Earl Grey tea (brown sugar and large glass tea pot served) and a mocktail. $5 is pricey but it is upscale after all.
Since I want to finish my dinner, decided to skip starters and just go for the main entrees.
I decided on the 8oz Sirloin steak and blue cheese sauce, with seasonal grilled vegetables and fingerlings (purple, yellow and red new potatoes with caramelized onions) .
My spouse ordered the Braised Beef Short Ribs with peppercorn sauce (boneless and so tender, like pulled pork) served with golden smash mashed potatoes and caesar salad.
While waiting for our food, our server brought us two tiny glass dishes on top of a white plate. In the little glass dishes were that sweet chilli with guacamole sauce topped over little deep fried potato hash browns. Complimentary appetizer that entertained us and added a nice touch to occupy us. Then our hot fresh bread came to our table that looks like a large muffin because its served in a cute little pot. My gosh, its was entertaining and when we sliced it, it was light, warm and almost resembles a yorkshire pudding but its denser. We spread the lightly dusted brown sugar butter on it and we are blown away. The taste and texture of this bread just melts in your mouth and the taste combination with the great presentation was phenomenal. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Then came our entrees. The beef short ribs were tender, and the taste is not overpowering that I can actually still taste the beef essence. Caesar salad was not salty and overly topped with too much parmesan cheese which is such a refreshing change of pace. The golden smashed potatoes had a crispy crust on it and it tasted great.
My sirloin was ordered medium and it actually came out better than I expected. It was warm red colored but not bloody dripping when I cut it. It was still juicy and left no red juice mess on my plate. The presentations of these two dishes were very well executed and look like art. Pity I had to devour it but it tasted so good so its justified.
We were satisfied with the portions and actually had no room left for dessert but we still did not turn down the dessert menu. Upon review, we declined the dessert and relaxed some more to enjoy the atmosphere. Our friendly server came back with a small plate of dessert! Three little squares of dessert I can't describe but peaked my interest. They look simple but big on taste. We thoroughly enjoyed our entertainment and surprises and look forward to coming back again.
For our next visit, we are just going to try their dessert, another one we will order just their appetizers since we want to finish it there so we can do justice to these menu items.
Sure the food is pricey, but for your special occasion, you got to come here and try it. I will be back here.
