We arrived on a Thursday night after making a reservation and the place was nearly empty. During the course of our visit, a few other tables came and went but the restaurant was not at all busy. The hostess was wearing her large winter boots inside, which looked odd...otherwise she was respectably dressed (something other Edmonton restaurants should encourage their hostesses to do).
Service was OK. Upon arrival, we were promptly seated at our table and asked to help remove the additional table setting. During service, water was refilled as needed, although the waiter asked one guest to pass his glass a few times (when the waiter could have reached from behind). I was asked if I wanted a glass for my bottled beer (yes, please!) and received one much larger than the volume of the bottle. Therefore the service was very good, but a few things could have made it perfect!
We all ordered Baked French Onion soup. It was priced OK at $6-7. It was pretty saltly. Based on that, I'm assuming that it was "brought in" instead of from scratch (and, yes, there are restaurants that still make their soups from scratch).
We all ordered a beef main: 2 steaks and a prime rib. All of us ordered the sauteed wild mushrooms as an additional side.
When the food arrived, the first food server to the table was not the waiter, so he asked us what we had ordered. The seasonal vegetable was steamed broccoli with a garlic sauce (sauce not mentioned on menu). The one guest with a baked potato waited about a minute before the waiter returned with the dressings.
The beef quality was high and all of us received our beef to the doneness we had ordered. The prime rib came with a Yorkshire pudding which was pretty dry. The sauteed wild mushrooms were unexpectedly "sauced up"; it was closer to a mushroom gravy than sauteed mushrooms. Two of us chose the salad as the second included side dish; it was sufficient.
The decor was dated and in disrepair. For instance, the lamps above some of the old-time photos were brass and could stand top be updated. Many (most?) of the lamps were askew by more than 30 degrees; very uncomfortable to look at for the duration. Air vent fins are very dented and look shoddy. The bathroom had been updated, but the electronic paper towel dispensers weren't operational.
Given the prices, food quality, service, and decor I'd pick somewhere else in the future (there are nicer places for the price to food quality to service ratio).
