Cafe Select has been a long time favorite restaurant located in downtown Edmonton. Over the 25 years I have been dining here I have seen several decor changes, expectable staff turnover, and slight menu revisions. 2012 saw Select taken over by an established restaurant from the south side, Packrat Louie. The big question would be: can Packrat take it over without ruining it?
Short answer: Yes.
The decor remains the same with light walls and dark wood; the lighting level is on the low side. Set down from the street with only a couple tables at the window, and several tables on the front patio during summer months, the atmosphere is quietly chic. What is noticeable is the lack of noise commonly found in every new restaurant that pops up these days. At Select you can have actual conversation at normal speaking levels.
The menu is much shorter, reduced to 3 trifold pages, including a minuscule desert selection. Gone are the days of 4+ house made cheesecakes, pies, cake, flan and mousse to chose from.
Our server calmed my fears by mentioning the mussels, the cheese from the fondue, and the steak frites have survived the menu overhaul. Mind you, none of these were any of my favorite plates from days gone by. I will forever miss the Hot Squid Salad, French Onion Soup, rack of lamb, Croque Monsieur and Cocquilles Chicken Mornay. (Forgive my spelling, please)
We settled on the gnocchi fondue to share between 3 of us and it was delicious; it serves two comfortably.
We all had the same entree, the pan roasted chicken, and it was declared by all to be one of the best chicken dishes ever ordered. It was full of flavour and the portion size was just right. With all the changes taking place the kitchen hasn't missed a beat.
The chocolate cake with Port soaked cherries was either on the dry side or maybe just too cold. Nonetheless it was a dense dark chocolate cake and icing, pretty standard recipe, with grown up cherries.
The service was friendly and well timed.
Street parking is available or there is a parkade across the street.
