This was our second road-trip to Whyte Ave in Edmonton and this time we stayed at Metterra. I have to say we really lucked out on this choice.
The fellow that helped us check-in and check-out was really professional and helpful. (Exactly what I like to see.) When booking the hotel, I spoke to an employee and requested, if possible, adjacent rooms as I was booking two rooms (I was staying over the long-weekend and didn't know how full the hotel would be) and she said she would make a note and they would try their best to accommodate us. So when we checked-in, he upgraded our room to adjoining suite rooms without extra charge and without any extra request. I was pleasantly surprised when we got to the rooms and discovered that we got a mini suite with microwave (in one of the rooms) and fridge (both rooms) (great for restaurant left-overs!)
The rooms were really clean, nice bright bathrooms, and maybe I'm impressed by the little things, but they had in-room Keurig coffee machines with a selection of coffees and tea...beats those old school hotel mini coffee makers that leave grounds in your coffee, any day (blegh).
I was a little afraid of rowdy bar-goers coming back late at night, but the walls must have been super thick because I didn't hear anything (I also made a request for a "quiet" part of the hotel so maybe that's why, I can't say which this is but I was happy either way). The last hotel I stayed at on Whyte Ave had paper thin walls and every sound carried from the next room, so it felt like we were the only people on our floor comparatively at Metterra!
The location is perfect, close to the corner of 104St and Whyte ave...in the middle of E-town Hipster's paradise, ;) so dropping off shopping bags etc. at the hotel was super convenient!
When I had read some other reviewers about their concerns about the valet service I was a bit anxious that we would be circling the block waiting to snag a spot at the valet drop off. We did arrive on a Thursday afternoon at about 3pm, so maybe that's why we had no problem about dropping off the car, but I thought I would just mention it, in this review, just in case this is a determining factor in choosing a hotel that it may not be a huge deal. It just depends on your timing and if you arrive during a busy time of the day/week or not so I would plan accordingly, if possible.
I also read an interesting comment on another review about an experience that there was no offer with baggage to the rooms. How do you get your baggage to the hotel in the first place? Maybe some people travel with giant steam trunks or something but mine has wheels and doesn't weigh 100lbs...just sayin...
The only complaint I would think of mentioning was that there were only feather pillows available in the rooms. Usually one is tucked away in the hall closet, but that one was also a feather pillow... so in my effort to get a comfier pillow to sleep on, I was thwarted. Though I can't place blame on the hotel entirely, in that it is a generality that most people prefer feather pillows (one of those outdated technologies that have yet to be phased out of use...we don't have horse hair mattresses anymore, so why do we continue to use feather pillows that turn into rock-hard wedges over a foam pillow?! I have no idea!!) **steps off soap box**
All in all, I was very impressed on every aspect of our stay at Metterra, next time I'm in E-town I will definitely come back again!
Request a quieter room when checking-in if Whyte ave bar-goers are an issue.
Check-in time is at 3p...
