“You Don't Have to Leave Edmonton to Escape the City!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2014

Just a quick note to say how much we enjoyed our stay again at your lovely hotel! The room was delightful and our escape from Edmonton perfectly wonderful.

Our incredible six-course meal prepared by Chef Charla was truly a masterpiece of culinary experience! Thank you all; not only on behalf of my wife and myself, but also our friends who joined us for a fabulous meal! Our front-of-house tour guide / host / sommelier Todd then completed the experience with charm, wisdom, and total aplomb! He was efficient, humorous, and ubiquitous . . . my three favorite qualities in a professional server.

It was great as always to see Kevin the next morning as we enjoyed a delicious breakfast!

I booked a heritage suite for Valentines day along with dinner at Madison Grill. The staff at both hotel and restaurant were courteous, caring and wonderful. They were true professionals, a very rare thing to find these days. The room was clean, charming, ornate and very comfortable. Everything was thought out in the design down to the towels. A plate of cheese, crackers and wine was waiting for us in our room. The crackers where made in house and the cheese was a well aged 25 year kind. Not kraft or cracker barrel. Our meal was a pre-planned 5 course meal that was to die for. The restaurant was not loud even with the families with children and had a wonderful ambiance. Our only problem was our table was uneven. Breakfast was served complimentary the next morning in the same restaurant and was a la carte. Wait staff were still amazing and my spinach omelette with fruit and toast was perfect. If you want to be treated like royalty I preferred it over our Christmas dinner at Fairmont Banff spring hotel.

Room Tip: Park at City Centre East if after 6 pm on Friday or all weekend. It costs around $6 for overnight. I...

The sign on Jasper avenue is deceiving. The hotel entrance is around the corner. Stayed in the Heritage section in the Vienna room. Room was really, really nice and comfortable. Graham at the front desk was excellent. He made sure that checkin was efficient, and his friendly and engaging manner set the tone for my stay. Daily plate of crackers, cheese, grapes, and wine in the room was really appreciated. Service at Madison's was stellar.
Highly recommend the Union Bank Inn

Room Tip: Try the Heritage rooms on one visit, and the Contemporary room on the next.

Do not be scared by the fact much of this building is 100 years old. Everything I saw was good quality, modern and worked very well. Desk, housekeeping and restaurant staff were all first rate. Everything about the place is calm and dignified yet friendly. I chose it because it is close to the Shaw center; but everything you need, including shopping malls, are close by.

I have stayed here a few times on business and on occasion used the conference rooms for business meetings/purposes. The staff was always so friendly, accomodating and went above and beyond. I received complimentary room upgrades as well as breakfast in Madison's Grill. Food there was excellent.

The hotel itself is amazing - location is excellent, rooms are very unique, comfortable and cozy. Front desk staff is excellent to deal with. (I think the gentlemans name was Ocean).

Definitely a hidden gem inside of Edmonton and would without a doubt recommend this to Hotel to anyone.

Not sure to where to start but you'd think it would be hard to screw up a wedding for 14 guests!

In the 8 months from the time we booked to the actual wedding we dealt with 4 different catering coordinators. Each one had no idea what had been planned/discussed with her predecessor. The final coordinator we dealt with wanted to meet with us 2 weeks before before our wedding to go over our event. We declined this meeting as we had all the facts on contract and were busy with final wedding preparation. Many faxes were sent back and forth to familiarize and finalize the wedding.
There were many disasters along the way to and included on our wedding day.
*The tasting was done in Madison's Grill 1 month prior to our wedding. The form you fill out very clearly states that coffee and tea are included. At the end of our tasting we were presented with a bill for these items. After paying we contacted the catering coordinator who advised there was an error and it would be rectified. A few weeks later the next catering coordinator advised us that the coffee and tea was NOT included (despite the fact I had a paper document stating it was) .
*The meal @ the tasting was a misrepresentation of what we received on our wedding day. The meal @ the tasting was hot, juicy and tasty, whereas the meal on our wedding was COLD and dry. When we spoke to the hotel manager on the next business day we were informed we needed to advise of the meal issue @ the time it was served. We are not sure what they would have done at that point (perhaps come out with a pot of gravy or microwave our meals) but, as every bridal advisor will tell you, you need to decide if you want to let a problem go or risk ruining your day for everyone by creating a issue. The banquet manager reported we told him the meal was "excellent" and the chef claimed the meal was exactly as we were presented with @ our tasting. Apparently photos should have been taken of each meal.
* The catering beverage contract did not indicate the need to order spring water. There was a limited courtesy supply of 8 bottles (500ml Arctic Chillier spring water with the hotel label). The beverage contract had no listing for this to even be ordered. The hotel manager told me this is an expensive item that cannot be just be given away. (perhaps that is why the fridge was absolutely empty in our $359.00/night -with no discount for the bride & groom- executive suite)
*The service for dinner was horrible. The courses were served erratically. We had to request coffee and tea (both luke warm) . We had to request the wedding cake be taken to the kitchen to be cut and served.
* The bar ran out of glass wear one hour before our contract time ended.
* The balance of the layer of wedding cake served for desert WAS THROWN OUT! The next day upon checkout we were told it could not be found . All the fridges had been checked and the person to ask was not in yet. We were asked to go home and we would be called. By the time we got home there was a message on our answering machine stating the entire later (22 servings) had been served for the 14 guests - their servings were 'larger" than the cake shop portions. The servings were in fact tiny. After talking to our best man the next day he stated he saw the remainder of the layer through the service doors near the bar and had contemplated asking for more cake as the portions were tiny. During my phone conversation with the hotel manager it was confirmed we cake had been thrown out. Note: we did receive compensation for the balance of the cake (although the number of servings was still being disputed),and the cake cutting fee.
*Numerous faxes back and forth with the catering/setup staff to confirm the decorations were a waste of time as 1 hour prior to our wedding I checked the banquet room to find a gentleman who advised me he was "very well qualified" in this type of work and would make the room beautiful, but it was not what was on the faxes. 2 tables had to be moved as they were in the way for the ceremony and the cake table was too small. The room looked very nice but was not what was planned and requested.
* The catering contract clearly states that coffee and tea are included with the $49/plate dinner. During dispute resolution with the hotel manager we were informed that the hotel decided to supply us with COMPLIMENTARY coffee and tea for our wedding due to all the problems we had prior. The hotel manager also stated out meal price was adjusted to the "old menu" pricing (the price changed @ the time of our tasting) when in fact the adjustment was made because we supplied our wedding cake for desert and did not choose an item from the desert menu of our 4 course meal. It appears the hotel manager has no clue as to how the catering department is run or is insulting our intelligence. We are not sure which.

We chose to go directly to the hotel manager with our concerns, even prior to our wedding, as the catering team seemed increasingly incompetent and our apprehension and lack of confidence grew. Once you have left $1675.00 non-refundable you have no choice but to stick it
out. Note: the hotel did also refund us the 17% gratuity on the event to compensate for poor service but continues to dispute any other issues we had stated.

We chose this hotel as it had a room perfect size our needs. Somewhere where we could hold cocktails, our ceremony and a small intimate dinner without having to move furniture or be in the corner of a giant ballroom. The original wedding coordinator we dealt with was very professional and gave us great confidence in what the hotel had to offer. Sadly we have many no so pleasant memories of our wedding and would not wish our series of events on any couple

This hotel is a complete disappointment. We checked in January 1, 2014 expecting to have dinner and breakfast the next morning at the hotel. We do understand the holiday however during booking process a month prior were told they would be open. It would have been nice if they called us to let us know this had changed. Also to our disappointment there are only about 5 available TV channels. The rooms are VERY small and do NOT deserve the title of Suites. On top of the 299.00/nt there are additional charges to park your vehicle in the hotels Parking lot. The rooms are indeed nicely decorated but I do not see how this is any better than a Holiday Inn with free breakfast and parking. Save your hard earned money for something enjoyable, not this pretentious over priced waste of time and money.

Thank you for your feedback! All guest reviews are taken seriously and we appreciate your time and suggestions. This guest's complaints were addressed by management at the time of stay and fair compensation was awarded. Union Bank Inn most certainly does have more than 5 television channels so there must have been some confusion on how to properly work the TV. All of our front desk agents are more than willing and able to help with any technical issues a guest may be experiencing. We encourage any guest's who have questions, concerns or complaints to bring to the attention of our front desk team who can then resolve immediately. Again wanting to thank you for your feedback and invite you to contact us if you'd like to speak further. - Management
