Owner description: Whyte Avenue (also known as 82 Avenue) is an arterial road in south-central Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It became the main street of the City of Strathcona as it formed, and now runs through Old Strathcona. It was named in 1891 after Sir William Whyte, who was superintendent of the CPR's western division from 1886 to 1897 and was knighted by King George V in 1911. Old Strathcona is Edmonton's main arts and entertainment district, and is also a shopping hub for local residents and students at the nearby University of Alberta. Whyte Avenue, now a heritage area, is at the heart of this district, housing many shops, cafes, restaurants and bars.

“Walk on Whyte”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2012

It has some atmosphere to be a tourist trap minus all the chaos on the street side. In the evening, the noise and entertainment definitely reach their peak. But be aware of drunk people.

“Eclectic Fashion Heaven”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2012

Shopped Whyte Ave. with my daughter, who has pretty different tastes in clothes yesterday. She was in Heaven finding things she couldn't find even back home in the GTA. Perhaps even better than Queen Street West; she thinks maybe...

Stores to try for those "alternative" shoppers who prefer black: Devine, Mars and Venus, and Rowena (around 104 Street).

If you're a fan of alternative art (especially Camilla D'Errico) try the store upstairs from Mars and Venus.

“Fun”

Whyte Avenue is a fun place to see interesting shops and interesting people. It is like Beale Street in Memphis and Ibor City near Tampa.

“A must see in Edmonton”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2012

Whyte Avenue is the heart of the city. Lots of interesting shops to explore-everything from Army &Navy to Gravity Pope! Great restaurants. If time permits catch some music in Blues on Whyte. This street is not to be missed if you are visiting Edmonton.
