“First time hostel !”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 weeks ago

Stayed for a night. First timer in hostelling. Staff were really friendly. Rooms were ok and had a good sleep, that is if you have nice quiet roommates. Apart from some super loud dudes way past the quiet time at 11pm, everything else was ok. Parking is a little bit tight..would have to depend on luck to get one. Sower was nice but bathroom sink and mirror a little bit tired-looking, should probably consider making it to look better (it looked like my university's washroom).

Thanks for your comments. I'm glad you found our staff very friendly and that you had a good sleep. We have 12 free parking stalls out back and if those are full, we can direct you to further parking options. We do have one washroom that still needs some up updating, but all of our other washrooms were renovated a few years ago. Greg, Manager

All staff were super friendly and accommodating and knowledgeable, the rooms were cleaned every day, and the location is fantastic! It's a little warm in the rooms, but hardly a deal breaker. If I'm in the area I would definitely stay again.

Helpful staff, when you need any information they'll try to do the best to simplify everything.
Very clean rooms, kitchen and living room. There is a game room, it's seems to be a good place to spend some time, but from the rooms you listen almost everything if people isn't quite enough.
One thing that i didn't like was the washroom cleaning, and a lack of events to do. I spent 10 days and just happened 1 bbq.

I stayed at HI Edmonton for 12 days while in town for work. Very clean, super helpful staff, and amazing location. A more working than traveling crowd than most hostels, but still a great stay overall.

I was in a six-bed dorm and found it very spacious and clean. My bed was comfortable as well. The kitchen was well organized and equipped. The location near Whyte Avenue, but also near the 9 bus line to take you right downtown, was definitely the biggest perk.

Hi edmonton is a ok place to stay but it's very boreing I'll tell u that rightnow it's not a party hostel after 11pm it's quiet time.and the beds Suck if your on the bottom bunk lol there is no room to sit up its very tight lol the only good thing about hi edmonton is that it is cheap and that's about it considering the location.

In brief:
Pros
Staff were very helpful
Rooms were ready before expected which was ideal as we arrived earlier than expected

Rooms were very clean and tidy
We were impressed by the space this hostel boasts in all aspects - games room, tv room was cool too

Location was fine

Locker space was excellent!!

Cons
The whole place felt a bit depressing and sorry for itself with regards to the atmosphere and general feel. I think the large open spaces perhaps adds to that feel.

No breakfast included!

No side lights for reading!

My suggestions are as follows:

Add some brighter colours and update or enhance the info/sights walls! - many leaflets were from 2012, not good at all!

A continuity should be established between all HI hostels with regards to the breakfasts and layouts

The kitchen looks great! however at least a small breakfast buffet should be achievable, especially as other Hi hostels offer free cooked breakfast!

Get side lights shelf next to bed

In final, I appreciate different hi hostel locations should resemble a unique feel to the area, thus answering the continuity aspect. But this hostel has only lead to a bad reflection of Edmonton itself!

Small changes - big differences

Jon

The lady who checked us in was very welcoming and friendly. We had chosen a private double room as we are a couple. We were disappointed that it was a double on the bottom, single on top bunk bed in the room as it made it very dark on the bottom bed for reading e.t.c. Also the room was not very clean. The floor was dirty and also the cupboards were full of stuff that the guests before us had left behind. Things like spoons, maps and other bits and pieces. Also, on the first day a maintenance man came into the room to check that everything was in order, which was fine. On the second day he took it upon himself to come into the room without knocking to change a light bulb. I understand that light bulbs need changing but it was rather embarrassing as we were not dressed . The kitchen was much better than the room and was clean and a good size. There was also a games room with free ping pong, you had to pay for the other games. Parking was limited and rather dodgy. The only real benefit to the room was that there was a sink in it.

Thanks for your comments. I'm pleased to hear our staff was welcoming and friendly. However, I'm sorry to hear about the situation of our maintenance person entering the room that day. I have spoken to him about this. And I have reminded our housekeepers of our high cleanliness standards and to be checking all lockers for discarded items. We have a dozen free parking spots behind the hostel. If those are full, we can direct you to other parking. Greg, Manager
