“Good Location in the West”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 14, 2013

This hotel looks to have had some renovations recently. Pretty evident as older carpet was in the hallways. Good to see these hotels keeping up with the times, have to hand it to Sandman.

Very close location to the Calgary Olympic Park (right across the street) and very handy if you are looking to leave Calgary to the west or hit the Stony Trail to the south.

If you've been to Sandman you know what to expect however it's clean, comfy and doesn't disappoint.

Customer service was excellent as the person running the front desk asked questions I've never been asked in high level quality hotels. Very impressive.

This is a convenient location if you're going to be spending a lot of time at the Olympic Park for team events etc. It is slightly further back from the highway than the Sheraton across the street and so a but quieter. As noted in other reviews it is a tired looking place. The King suite we stayed in wasn't much of a suite. The "living room" was long and narrow and so it was hard for 4 people to create a space for conversation. The hotel hosts a lot of teams and can be noisy at times. The Denny's restaurant in the hotel is always crowded and noisy and we found the hotel bar to be a much better place to eat. Hotel seemed very warm considering the time of year. We turned off the heating and opened a window to maintain an appropriate temperature. Of course, the open window let in a lot more noise at night. Bed was okay but the pillows were not. Small but functional exercise facility.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the Trans Canada have highway noise. Rooms facing the back have truck activity. Proba...

The hotel needs a facelift. Rugs in the hallways are stained and the sofa in my suite was showing its age. TV in the bedroom was small and had a dark picture. The price was right, a king bed suite for $159 CAN, but it feels old.

This property is similar to many other Sandman Hotels in terms of the overall amenities, service & housekeeping, etc. Not Five Star, but perfectly good accommodations. The location is stellar if you need access to the south west portions of Calgary, and with all the freeway access close at hand it works for many purposes. Most of the rooms are basic, some with tiny kitchenettes, and some quite interesting with loft configurations. Having stayed here more than a few times, the front desk is reliable and room rates generally good except during Stampede, when the rules seem to be whatever the market will bear. The pool/hot tub/gym are basic but present.

Room Tip: Rooms on the back are away from the freeway but noise is not a big issue here.

My difficulties began with my reservation. The group number I had was not recognized by the telephone agent. I booked anyway, then phoned a direct contact person (at my cost) who corrected the reservation rate and upgraded my room (nice). At arrival at 6 p.m. There was one desk agent on the phone and 3 people waiting to check in. The room was as promised. But had some servicing shortcomings: crumbs on floor, packet of decaf only and an empty toilet roll holder (there was a backup). When I called at 10 p.m. for a wake-up call (twice) there was no answer. Servicing the next day was deficient also. My soiled towel (left in the tub) was left, but the clean bath mat was taken and not replaced. There are mostly just fast-food/Denny's within close proximity.

Room Tip: Top floor should be quieter. But the elevators are slow

We booked a Corporate King Size Suite with bedroom and living room. There is also a small kitchenette with microwave and fridge and complementary coffee and tea. Bathroom is small. Check in and check out were fast. Receptionist is nice and helpful. They have a small gym and swimming pool. Our room was overlooking to the Olympic Park and it was nice sunny. Bed was convenient. My complaint is the cleaning. Hairs are everywhere; the towels, linen, floor, carpet….everywhere. And this is very disgusting. The carpet is overused and dirty. There was no vacuum cleaning in the room during our 2 nights. I think the cleaner just changes the towels she did not remove the used coffee filters from the coffee machine either.
