Decided to try this after it was mentioned by John Gilchrist as one of his top 20 restaurants in Calgary. High praise but was it worthy? I had to try!
I purposefully avoided all of their signature dishes as they were pricey. They may or may not be good but I thought that I could only be disappointed paying $25+ for an entree. So I stuck with classic Thai dishes and I wasn't disappointed. I ordered take-out on a Sunday evening and specified pick up at a certain time. I arrived 15 minutes early and they were bewildered to see me as to preserve freshness, they still hadn't cooked my dishes yet. I was really impressed by that!
I ordered: Pa-Nang curry with chicken ($16), green curry with pork ($16), red curry with beef ($16), Pad Thai with prawn ($14), drunken spaghetti seafood ($17) and chicken with cashew nuts ($16). We cooked our own rice at home to save some $$$. Six adults and there were still left-overs. Grand total of $99 which was very reasonable for a Thai restaurant.
I would definitely recommend the Pa-Nang curry, Pad Thai and chicken with cashew nuts. Green curry includes bamboo shoots which if you've never had, you may not like (very strong pungent smell that may be offensive to some people so if you have any reservations, go with another type of curry!). Pad Thai may be one of the best I've tasted. All of their curries were fantastic.
I've been to White Elephant in the NE which is ranked pretty high on Trip Advisor and I would say that this restaurant is definitely comparable in terms of food. Ambience and service definitely a notch higher here.
We do Thai take-out at least once every two weeks and I can guarantee we will be back for more Khao San!
