“Good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2013

This hotel is conveniently situated between town and the river. Friendly, helpful staff, comfortable suite with full kitchen. Good restaurants, lovely parks and shopping close by. While there is no pool, the gym is well equipped.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the hotel for a quieter night's sleep.

The place is ugly and smells bad, the bed was hard and lumpy, the room was not the cleanest and I could not wait to leave, it is terribly over priced. they lost my business I like clean and comfort.
I really think that the owner need to stay in the room a few days and sleep in the bed get a feel for what they are selling.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2013

I spent 10 nights in the Calgary Regency Suites in July on business. It was during the Calgary Stampede and hotel rooms were hard to come by so I consider myself fortunate to have found anything. My experience at the Regency was better than some of the other reviewers. My room was a standard-sized hotel room (think Marriott) with an attached complete kitchen. It would have been possible to cook full meals, although I stuck to things that could be microwaved. My room was neat, tidy, and clean. It didn't show any undue signs of age, in spite of the fact that the hotel is scheduled for a complete makeover this fall. The establishment does have an '80s look about it, particularly the lobby area. There is a workout room which seemed adequate (although I didn't use it). There is also a guest laundry where guests can wash and dry a load for $5.50 CDN. I didn't need to use that either, but other guests were clearly doing their laundry. The lobby is minimal, with only the desk clerk available to provide information and services. There is no food service beyond the vending machines. The hotel has some outdoor parking spaces behind the building for which they charge $15 CDN per might.

The Regency is located on the northwest edge of Calgary's downtown core. Across the street is an old strip mall with a Mac's (local 7-11), a liquor store, and a bar and wings establishment. There is also a mini mart about two blocks away with a larger selection of food and other items than the Mac's next door. There is a good Indian restaurant in the next block and some other establishments nearby (although it certainly isn't in a restaurant district). The Skywalk (locally known as +15) can be entered about a block from the Regency. Using the skywalk will enable guests to comfortably access most buildings (and the nearest C-Train station) in the downtown core during inclement weather. Otherwise, in good weather Calgary is a very walkable city, and the streets look as safe as any in North America. The Eau Claire shopping and dining complex is about a 5 - 10 minute walk from the Regency. It offers a multiplex cinema and a number of coffee shops and restaurants.

My only serious complaint was that the Internet connection was rather slow. The speed of the hotel WiFi deteriorated during periods of heavy usage (most evenings). Having called in advance to inquire about the internet, I learned that there was also an Ethernet outlet in every room that was no faster than the WiFi in periods of low usage, but didn't slow down as much as the wifi during the evening. I brought my own WiFi hub and had better Internet service than most other guests. At its best, the system would not download faster than 450 Kbits/sec (for you Internet gurus). If you have a wired connection to your Internet device, bring it - it will help some. When the hotel is renovated this fall, they really need to do something about the slow Internet connection.

The price I paid was outrageous, over $600/night on some nights, but that was a function of the ongoing Stampede, and the hotel is more reasonably priced during normal periods.

Room Tip: A high room will result in less noise from the street.

Got a clean and OK room/apartment. Nothing fancy but the place had what they said that they should have. No bar or restaurant but lots of breakfast places near by and bars was easy to find.
Check out became a little hectic but one can hardly blame the hotel for the Calgary flood and the fact that power was out and the luggage had to be carried down from 12th floor.

This hotel has so much potential: a central location, huge suites, and proximity to major sites. It's a shame it's been allowed to run down. But the good news is renovations are coming soon. The Regency needs a facelift to remedy such things as heat that won't shut off, a telephone that didn't work, and inadequate wifi signal.

Otherwise I enjoyed my stay at the hotel: the privacy of my own bedroom, a kitchen in which to make my breakfasts, and a large living room for entertaining friends. The suite was clean and very liveable. For those who expect perfection the Westin is just a few blocks away if you don't mind paying more.

We used to stay at the five downtown and that place was truly a hidden gem. It shut down and we have been finding another place since and the regency suites on the next street really was not worth the value. Rooms are small for the price and quite a dirty hotel to be honest. I wish they would upgrade the rooms a little and im sure they would get a lot of business their way as their location is priceless!
