“Our stay was okay.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2012

- breakfast was okay, a selection of cereals, breads and fruits, the hot entrees were fine
- the bedroom was okay, not overly big, it felt like a room in the basement - which it was, it had a window that provided light and fresh air
- the ensuite bathroom was very small, and only had a shower curtain - no door - separating it from the bedroom, a situation which we found very uncomfortable
- located in northwest Calgary and had decent access throughout the city by car, not sure about public transit
- quite nice backyard with a deck right along the river's edge
- we did find the common/breakfast room a little busy - visually - with books, magazines, ornaments and furniture, etc., so much so that we found it difficult to relax

Room Tip: After rereading past reviews, and staying in a standard room, I would strongly suggest staying in on...

This is our lowest rate room -also excellent quality for a great price. At time of booking you realize that there is a separate price for different rooms. Most quests choose this room for the lowest price & the fact it is a walkout to our amazing backyard & river deck on the Bow River. Plus numerous amendities & facilities & services for our quests comfort . For a few dollars more ( $15-for the Royal Queen & $25-for the Royal King ) you have all the luxuries of a 5 star hotel. There is a pocket door already purchased for this room and will be installed as soon as it is not booked for a few days. .Also this area is furnished & decorated with 3 and even 4 generations items and many artifacts from our own travels world wide. We and most all of our quests love it ! We feel so fortunate to be able to provide such a quiet , peaceful, relaxing place for all our quests that come to Along River Ridge B&B.

We arrived late due to a plane delay. Our host greeted us, and we were shown to our lovely, very big, room. Excellent decor, very comfortable bed, fireplace, and large jacuzzi tub with lots of extra toiletries. The setting along the river is beautiful and extremely pleasant, calm, and quiet. We were served an excellent breakfast, more than enough food, and enjoyed a conversation with the other people who stayed the same night. The view from the dining area is wonderful, the hosts are very fortunate to have this view everyday. They were very helpful in recommending a restaurant, and a visit to a nearby town on our way to Calgary. I would love to stay here for several days and take advantage of the serenity, and wonderful hosts.

I had been on the road for two days and the hotels in the area were all booked. I called after 9pm and luckily got to stay at this beautiful gem of a bed and breakfast. My back was killing me from driving so a nice long soak in the hot tub was amazing. Such a relaxing atmosphere and great hospitality. We slept wonderfully with our window open breathing the cool fresh air from the river while listening to the gurgling waterfall of the small gold fish pond, along with the song birds in the garden outside of our room. We woke up refreshed and we're treated to an amazing breakfast. Wonderful people, beautiful place, great location.

My girlfriend and I saw this Bed and Breakfast on trip advisor. We both loved staying here and are planning a return visit.

I contacted the hosts via E-mail, and received a quick and courteous response. When we arrived we were initally skeptical of the "relaxing country home with views of the river" that was advertised as it is located in the heart of the city. We were proven wrong. The location of the bed and breakfast could not be more ideal. We were warmly greeted by one of our warm hosts, Merrill. He showed us to our immaculate room and took us on a tour of the bed and breakfast. What a beautiful gem in the best location of the city! We were asked what time we would like breakfast in the morning and enjoyed our evening. There is No shortage of books to read, movies to watch, or if that does not appeal to you there is a hot tub and pool table to enjoy. We both slept wonderfully in our room, when we woke up and came out of our room an amazing breakfast was waiting for us. There was breads, cereals, yogurt, fresh fruit, home made perserves and coffee and many choices of tea and then we were served a hot breakfast of eggs, farm fresh ham, roasted vegetables and hashbrowns. Merrill took a picture of us at breakfast and then printed it out and gave it to us right after breakfast. From all the helpful hints about the city, the food and hospitality that Merrill and Dianne provide, this place is the finest I have stayed in. Never again will I book a hotel in Calgary.

Along the river was the best bed and breakfast I have stayed in. The breakfasts are to die for. Merril & Dianne are very excellent hosts and give a good conversation and are very knowledgeable about Calgary. We were totally relaxed staying there and it was just what we needed when awaiting a surgery! Very peaceful and a great view! Would stay again anytime!!

I arrived in Calgary after a long 9hr flight from the UK and I couldn't have wished for a nicer place to relax. Sitting by the river was so peaceful, the room cosy, and Merril and Dianne make you feel really welcome - Merril even kindly offered to drive me to the university (usually a 20 min walk). I must also mention the breakfast, which was magnificent! Overall, the stay definitely exceeded all my expectations and was excellent value for money!

Calgary, a small city by most standards has urban sprawl... so after spending $42 on a taxi from NE Calgary (airport) to NW Calgary, I was definitely hoping the 'punt' on a B&B rather than staying downtown in a hotel would pay off... and it did.

Diane and Merril run a small business on a grand scale from their home in the North West of Calgary, up by the Olympic Park.

Set amidst houses, ARR backs on to the Bow River with spectacular views.

We wanted to have a little luxury, so we booked the King Suite, a warm, invitingly large room with it's own deck (with a view of the driveway, surrounding houses and he hills to the right... however, a myriad of bird life including woodpeckers and the like, flitted between the evergreens and surrounding trees). A jacuzzi tub, large standalone shower wih rainfall shower head, three way fireplace, dressing room, fridge and wine cooler, desk and seating area and one of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept on. Oh and not forgetting he large TV (he was happy!), and blue ray player (Despicable Me and Kettle Corn was a lovely night in after a busy day in the Rockies!)

Not only are the rooms beautifully appointed but Diane and Merril have thought of everything. Our room had an abundance of washroom toiletries, towels, specialty bath goods as well as lotions and any and every item a girl could need to get herself set for a day out!

We also had the use of a kitchenette just outside the room where w had use of a kettle, microwave, an additional fridge with utensils and crockery or any and every requirement (including an abundance of teas, coffees, biscuits and popcorn).

Breakfast was a feast, and it wasn't until the 3rd morning that we realised we'd overlooked the cereal bar... Although, with the variety of food already awaiting us on the table, I'm not sure where we would fit the additional food (pockets or shoes!)

Each morning Diane and Merril serve something different and inviting every day (toast and bacon smell often chivvied us to breakfast) from pancakes, to waffles, to (amazing) French toast, eggs, sausages and (delicious) bacon! All served with fresh juice, coffee and tea, fresh fruit, toast (with homemade jams), yogurts and cheese! Yum!

This all served in the dining room which overlooks the deck, garden and the river! A couple of mornings we were joined at breakfast by one of the local squirrels and many of the local bird life, which added to the relaxing and rural ambience of ARR.

We didn't make much use of the facilities other than to lay our heads and eat breakfast before heading out again, but we were made to feel just a welcome as those who spent more time in and around the property.

A must for travellers staying here s a rental car! Public transport is available from the four corners of the city to downtown but it's difficult and expensive to get across quadrants and anywhere else (Banff, Drumheller etc...)

My only other little niggle would be that the wireless internet is VERY spotty and in the room its difficult to keep connection which is a little frustrating!

ARR however is a little gem and provided a relaxing and luxurious treat for an amazing price. I'm looking forward to returning in the summer!

Thank you Diane and Merril!
