Dec 23, 2007

Stayed here a week in December 2007.

Hotel is not large at all. I think there are maybe 10 rooms per floor, so it was very quiet. Good sized bathroom with nice showerhead (adjustable). Room also had a microwave and minifridge.

Less than a block from the train system (I didn't use it, though), but nice to know next time. Plenty of parking (covered and uncovered) There was Pub next door and a Mac's convenient store about a block away as well as many ethic restaurants withing 2 blocks walk.

I was very pleased with the service I received. I arrived early, around 12:30 PM I think, and the room was ready for me. I was sure I'd have to hang around for a few hours... Mid stay, my laptop could not connect to the internet (free) in my room. I called the front desk, explained the problem, and the guy actually came up to the room to fix it. No transfers to a foreign helpdesk, no blank "sorry, I can't help you", no wait until the next day for a tech...he actually came up to the room and fixed it after about 2 minutes of tinkering. Normally losing internet access for night would be no real biggie, but I had a lot of work to do that night. What a lifesaver!

Also, I'm not sure if it was because I stayed a week, or because of my priority club membership, but I was given a code to the underground garage to park for the week. There were only around 10 -12 spaces down there, but it felt very secure and wasn't as cold as being outside, even covered parking. I don't think everyone got the code because there were plenty of cars parked in the above ground parking, and still space in the garage. Again, not sure why, but ask and maybe you can park there....

There was a computer with printer in the lobby area so you could print your boarding passes, etc., too.

No onsite restaurant, but there was a continental type breakfast every morning. I thought it advertised hot food, (think sausage, eggs, etc.), but there were only cereals, milk, juice, coffee, pastries and cinnamin rolls, at least the two days I went to see what was there. (the rolls are awesome).

Overall, what I've come to expect from the Holiday Inn "Express" brand. No the Ritz or Four Season by any stretch, but consistent, comfortable, cost effective, and clean.

I stayed here for one night on business. The accommodations were adequate for a short business stay. I would not stay here again if I were visiting on a family vacation. The drive to Banff was fantastic. I would love to go back there.

“With earplugs, a good bet for a good price”

Holiday Inn Express Calgary

George Underwood at the front was an excellent help. His friendly and talkative welcome made the whole stay pleasant. He made sure I had everything I needed right from the start (including an ethernet cable for the internet, take out menus for food, locations of pop, ice and gym). The check in was quick and very painless.

Ordering food was not. Calgary is short on workers and you feel this pain when trying to get food delivered. 90 minute waits for most delivery places and that is if the restaurants even had food left!! Yes, I am serious. One Sushi restaurant told me they were out of food and it was only 8:00pm. So, if you pick up your dinner or go out to eat you will be fine as there is no restaurant on site. They do, however, provide a continental breakfast (Toast, muffins, hard boiled eggs, fruit and yogurt).

I found the room I had to be rather noisy. The street noise was fairly loud and I could hear my neighbour talking on the phone for quite awhile. I also found the pillows to be very puffy and not easy to flatten. Minor details but it did make it less comfortable than it would have been otherwise.

The rooms are in good shape, and have many amenities including a microwave and fridge. The beds are comfortable and the room layout is comfortable.

The area on 8th ave is a little sketchy, so be aware. There are plenty of people asking for money and some that are strung out on drugs. But, wander only 5 blocks north and you will find yourself at Holt Renfrew, and many other prime shopping locations on Stephen Avenue Mall.

For the value in downtown Calgary where hotel prices are crazy and availability is low, this is a safe bet for a short stay.

“Good value”

Holiday Inn Express Calgary

Oct 21, 2006

This hotel was good value. The staff were friendly. The free breakfast a bonus. The room was clean, quite and comfortable. The only thing that concerned me was the location, its a bit of a walk into the centre of Calgary but not too far, I did not feel 100% safe walking back at night with my partner but having said that nothing untoward hapened.

This hotel is nice and clean and the staff are very helpful and pleasant. The rates are good for what it is. The only negative remark I have about this hotel is the location. It is situated on the edge of downtown Calgary in a quiet area. It is a little out of the way but if you don't mind catching public transport it is OK and if you like lots of things happening around you I suggest you choose another hotel. However for the price, service and cleanliness it is hard to beat.
