This was the 3rd hotel in our 2 week stay in Alberta and I must say that we saved the worst till last. First was the key card system, we had the cards recoded 3 times as they wouldn't work in the lifts or our room door. Second, one of the beds was broken and kept falling inside the plinth which made the bed lopsided even after front desk was notified and they had supposedly got some one to fix it. Thirdly, paint flaking off the ceiling in the bathroom, toilet seat was loose and the faucets had seen better day's, The toilet took at least 10-15 minutes to fill and there was no extraction in the bathroom. Fourth, the smoke alarm in the nextdoor room which was empty during our stay kept going off in the early hours of the morning and it took an age before anybody from the front desk would come and silence it, so out of the four nights two were ruined, There was no complmentary internet access and parking was expensive.
It was not all bad, the bar was pleasant and the staff were friendly, Moxie's served nice food although at times it did take an age for it to arrive. The stay overall was Ok at best.

The Sandman is the most irritating hotel we have ever stayed in - largely the result of the card key system used for bedroom doors and for the 4 lifts. We were there only 6 nights and in that time had 3 re - issues of my card and 2 for my wife. It's very frustrating, after a long day footslogging round the sights, to wait for a lift, then get in it, and find that it won't go anywhere because the card isn't recognised. You then could have a wait at the overwhelmed reception to get a replacement. Usually however - but not always - there would be someone else going up and they may be able to get it going with their card - but not always! On the 11th floor, you then find the card won't work in the door - even tho it may have worked in the lift. Back to the lift, wait for it, down again stopping at several floors on the way, then wait at reception for a reissue - and wait again for a lift. The reception excuse the first time was card got demagnetised by mobile or coins - but mine was always kept in separate outer coat pocket with other notepaper. Who needs all this hassle on holiday.....
The lifts themselves were dodgy. Some broke down while we were there. Several times one would stop at a floor and the doors would remain shut. Pressing buttons to make it move on didn't always work - needed another card insert.
There was no water from any tap in our ensuite one day and after this was "fixed", a trickle from the handbasin tap was all we could get - we've seen better pressure in 2 star hotels in 3rd world countries. Reporting the trickle brought no result - so then leaning over the bath was the only way to wash your face.
Reception were often swamped in mornings and late afternoon - took us 25 minutes to check in and then we had to wait another 30 mins while the room was prepared - short of staff or computers or both.
There was a bedroom coffee maker but no kettle, so boiling water for tea was a very long process indeed. There was no bedroom safe. Room size was just adequate.
If you want to virtually half the cost of breakfast, pop outside and in 5 mins walk you can join lots of office workers filling up for the morning in several cafes/coffee bars - but most of these are not open at weekends.
On the positive side, the staff were friendly and tried to be helpful. The hotel is very well situated for the Light Railway (like an over ground London tube) in both directions - just outside.
Our overall impression was that there was too much profit being taken out and not enough being invested. Come here only if it's a really good deal and you are of a tolerant nature....l

I stayed at the Sandman with about 150 other convention-goers in Calgary. The hotel was not up to the task of caring for the needs of our convention-goers. The lobby is pretty, the desk staff tries hard, but above the lobby things get considerably worse. The rooms are dated and looking worn. According to friends, many rooms were worse than mine in that they had broken toilet seats, faulty shower heads, and the like. Rooms were barely tidied, bedcovers not even pulled up. Towels were in short supply, had to request something almost every day. Dirty cups often not removed. Hallways left cluttered with carts and supplies. Restaurant did not seem prepared to serve breakfast to all customers and ran out of food before breakfast time ended. I'd say the only plus for this hotel is its proximity to the Light Rail Train station. Oh, and our room rate was only $99. In that light, we chose to view it as "you get what you pay for."
