“My first B&B experience - from now on it's the only way I'll go !! Marsh Lake, Yukon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2010

As my family always lived in Calgary I never had to worry about where to stay. This was my first trip back after my mom's passing and I was really concerned about accommodations. I definitely had to be in the NW and could not find any hotels close enough. I googled NW accommodations and up popped the English B & B ad. The rest is history. The whole main floor was dedicated to the guests - kitchen included!! David & Teri were excellent hosts. The breakfasts were exceptional, the hot tub was fabulous, and thanks again Teri for the great massage. The gardens and decks were a nice surprise and I definitely put them to good use. I was there for 5 nights and will definitely be back there my next trip to Calgary. Thanks again Teri & David.

Staying in Calgary for 10 nights, this fantastic B & B was in a great location for us to stay, whilst visiting our son studying at University of Calgary, plus as a base to travel and explore the Rocky Mountains. It is only a 45 minute easy drive from the B & B into the Rockies.
This B& B is situated in a quiet location , and we were delighted with the facilities which included very comfortable bedding, large living areas, and hot tub.
The B& B is walking distance to a shopping centre, restaurants, and the train station.
Our hosts were generous with their knowledge and local advice, and made us feel very comfortable at all times.
A highlight of each day was Teri's beautifully prepared breakfasts.

We chose this B&B based on the excellent reviews it received on TripAdvisor, and we were not disappointed. I really appreciated the complimentary sherry and the use of the laptop. The rooms were simply decorated - we had the Victorian room, which wasn't really in a Victorian style, but it was very clean and comfortable. The breakfast was excellent the next day, and the pineapple cranberry muffins were fantastic!

My husband also appreciated the use of the hot tub after a long drive from Vancouver. We would definitely stay here again. The hosts were very helpful and gracious to us.

They do not book one night stays, so we contacted them a week prior, to which they accepted our one night booking, as they had room for us that night. This was the only drawback of the B&B, as we were only driving through Calgary, not staying there for a length of time.

This B&B was the perfect location to start our Canada road trip. After arriving at the airport it was only a short drive to the B&B. Although we only rented one double room, it seemed like the whole house belonged to us. Because the other room was vacant and the hosts live downstairs. So we could use the kitchen for dinner time.
Breakfast was served in the dinning room, we ate together with the hosts, which was perfect for getting some info about the city, etc. Grocery store was very near by and the bus and train connects perfect to downtown. There was a whirl pool available too, but we didn´t use it this time. Also it is a very nice neighborhood for walking or running.
We´ll be back when in town!!!!

First, let's admit it -- in Calgary you need a car to get around. Not a problem in our case. We'd spent the earlier part of the week between Jasper and Banff, and were overnighting in Calgary, intending to do a bit of city sightseeing before boarding our flight back to London. So we had the hire car, and if you're jingling a set of car keys Dalhousie Drive couldn't be more convenient -- in northwest Calgary, it's a short drive from the airport in the northeast of the city, on the way up to or back from Canmore / Banff / Jasper, and a few minutes from the northwestern terminus of the tram-system extension. Perhaps a bit distant from the centre of town if that's where your duty in Calgary lies; but would it hurt you to see something other than the inside of the Marriott?

Breakfast aside (Teri, Innkeeper I, gave David, Innkeeper II, and us eggs benedict and chocolate-chip muffins NOM NOM NOM; David, why aren't you spherical? Yes, her cooking is that good) you can self-cater here if you like. We used the charcoal grill out back for a couple of New York strip steaks from the mega-Safeway just off Dalhousie on 53rd, at the bottom of the street leading to the B&B. If that was Alberta beef, its reputation is entirely deserved. A green salad, some blue-cheese dressing, and a six-pack of Kokanee Beer -- note, please: Supermarkets don't sell alcohol in Calgary, so plan your shopping day accordingly -- oh, we dined well. And inexpensively!

The layout of the B&B is a bit unconventional for Canada. You have the run of the main floor of the house here, not the window-well-only Natasha Kampusch Suite, three-quarters belowground, that other innkeepers usually offer. (Teri and David have moved downstairs, it seems.) A small wing with two bedrooms (ours had an en-suite bathroom, I didn't check out the other) off a central hall can be closed off from the entry, dining room, kitchen, and lounge by shutting a single door into the hall. The shared spaces are lit in part by sun-wells, internally mirrored light conveyors that were wonderfully bright: An idea for our unfortunately dark little place in London. Our room looked out onto a deck over the double garage. It was sunny, spacious enough (ditto the bathroom), brilliantly clean (ditto the bathroom), and wonderfully cozy. The front garden is planted interestingly -- red oxalis! -- and attractively; the back garden, which gives on an -- alley? Ginnel? Whatever they call it in Alberta -- is terraced, again attractively planted, and includes that charcoal barbecue, seating if you want to eat outdoors, and the hot tub. We didn't try the hot tub; but if it's like the rest of the establishment, it will be a treat.

During our day-and-a-half stay in Calgary we dipped into the Glenbow Museum (*** out of *****) and, at Teri's recommendation, had a lovely, sunny, breezy ramble through Nose Hill Park. I'm not sure that Calgary is otherwise, in itself, a venue that offers a surfeit of Things To Do And See for the traveller without connections in the city. However, if your road passes through Calgary, see if you can stay with Teri and David. If we had done so on our first evening after that long flight from Heathrow, we'd have been beautifully rested for the next day's six-hour drive up to Jasper. Learn from our mistake: Break your journey into the Canadian Rockies inbound as well as outbound, and break it at the English B&B coming and going.

My wife and I stayed at the English Bed & Breakfast for 2 days, but had to cut short our stay due to the death of my wife's mother. Teri & Dave could not have been more helpful. They were very sympathetic and understanding. They gave us advise about booking a flight bakc home, airport infomation, alternative arrangements and well basically, a shoulder to cry on. Al the time, copious amounts of hot tea was available.
We found the accomodation excellant, if a little distant from the City Centre, which actually suited us fine. They allow you run of the upstairs, whilst they live downstairs. Rooms are a litte small, but perfectly adequate. Teri makes differing breakfasts each morning which do make a pleasant change from the norm. Easy to get to from the hotel and well placed for freeway connections to anywhere, this makes an ideal base for any vacation. We would heartily recommend!
