“Best place to stay in Banff National Park”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2010

The experience was wonderful from our initial interaction to our checkout. Moraine Lake is located a few miles form Lake Louise in Banff National Park

The room overlooked Moraine Lake and the view and ambiance was superb. The rooms come with a wood burning fireplace and the fireplace is ready to light and there is a plentiful stock of fire wood. The rooms are perfect for two people with a comfortable king bed, a generous bathroom and a small sitting area and a balcony, large picture windows overlook the lake and the mountain scenery. The staff is very friendly and many services are included in the room rate. Canoeing, hiking with a naturalist, a very nice buffet breakfast, etc.

The restaurant is excellent, with great entrees, desserts, and wonderful service and a very nice place to spend an evening.

We did not have a reservation and got the walk up rate that was very way under the normal rate so give it a try.

I read about Moraine Lake Lodge in a local newspaper (in Spokane, Washington State, USA) when they rebuilt and thought that I'd like to visit someday. Well, someday finally came in 2008 and -- I absolutely fell in love with the Lodge and the Lake. It is SO MUCH better than Lake Louise (please don't let this information get out; I want to preserve it for my own). The canoeing was incredible, the service impeccable, the dining was excellent, and the room was -- in a word -- superb. I had a view of the incomparable lake from my balcony. OK, let's see if another year holds out on my first impression -- I visited again in 2009 and you better believe it -- it totally did. The staff, rooms, dining room and everything else was awesome. The only downside was that there was alot of rain in the summer of 2009. So what? Moraine Lake Lodge is so relaxing and there are many other options to explore. Hmmm, hiking, canoeing, seeing other local sites..., etc.
So I decide to visit and spend another trip this July in 2010 to the Lodge -- WOW. The weather is awesome, the hiking is incredible, the room is great, the scenery is MAGNIFICENT, and I find that the dining room is still excellent! Thanks to Ryan Crawford, Nick, and Denise, as well as Michael Clark, the General Manager. You all
rock! I will be there again in 2011; I'm already planning on my dates.

After a long flight and a stopoverhotel in Canmore this was the first place we stayed in Canada. It was an expected highlight of the trip!

+ One of the most beautiful places I've ever stayed. The lake, the mountains, the lodge, it al fits together.
+ Excellent location to do the Lake Moraine walks early in the morning (before it gets busy).
+ very good (a bit expensive but worth it) restaurant with excellent service
+ Enjoy a tatsy breakfast with a view on the beautiful surroundings

- Moraine Lake gets a bit crowed with tourbusses between 10AM-5PM.

Forget Lake Louise - it's big and boring.
Go another 12km down the road to Lake Louise. A smaller, mountain locked lake (glacier-fed, so it's not full until mid-late June) which is not so busy.
The lodge here is perfect. Small (35 or so rooms), fantastic atmosphere. fantastic food and the staff are absolutely brilliant!
Some great walks around the lake, with guided walks available, canoes and far less visitors than the big Lake Louise. That's only 10 minutes away if you want to visit.

Moraine Lake Lodge is a truly spectacular place, and during our long travel across Canada this find turned out to be a real gem. The cabins are beautiful, cozy and well-situated with stunning views over Lake Moraine, which is in face of equal or even more stunning beauty than Lake Louise. It might get a little busy during the day, but never as bad as Lake Louise, which, in my opinion is a big tourist trap. The cabins have large windows overlooking the mountains and the lake, a fireplace and a very good bed - so who needs a tv? There are a lot of nice touches to the lodge that made our stay an even more memorable one, such as a very entertaining presentation by a naturalist, guided hikes to places like Consolation Lake, free use of the canoes, breakfast, and afternoon tea. Staff has been very helpful and friendly, being zipped to the lodge with our luggage in a golf-cart by the manager was enjoyable ;)

Our best stay during our vacation, and highly recommended. In low-season you might be able to discuss a better price than advertised.

Tip: If you find dinner a bit expensive you could go to Lake Louise (13kms away) and have an affordable and good meal at the restaurant in the hostel.

Moraine Lake Lodge is complete heaven. The setting is stupendous, the food is great, the cabins are cosy with huge windows over the mountains, log fires (no heating), verandas and huge beds. The staff could not be more helpful or friendly. There are nice touches such as afternoon tea in the library and a free cabaret from the ground squirrels. The walking is terrific-do go to Comsolation Lakes. i recommend it. only small downside is a lot of visitors in season. Thers is no television or phone in the rooms it is anti electronics in general

Moraine Lake is a great spot and the Lodge is just as nice. The Lodge is new, well maintained, very quaint and a pleasure to stay at. We stayed in the main suite of the lodge itself and it was really great. Be prepared for pricey meals if you want to eat on site, or you can also just eat in the Lake Louise village which is about 10 kms from the Moraine Lake Lodge. There was a bit of noise in the lodge, but we were there on a Canada Day weekend with lots going on. This is a very isolated location, so internet is dial up, there are phones and no TVs in rooms. That was what also made the place so quaint. Also, we are snobs about good beds. The bed we slept in was of excellent quality.

In sum, I really enjoyed this lodge and will definitely stay there again. As a side note, it has a great little gift shop. While it has a bit of the tacky souvenir stuff that you see in Banff, it had a lot of really great stuff that I would actually consider buying.
