Staying at Moraine Lake Lodge was our treat to ourselves. We stayed for 4/5 nights (can't recall now). We were disappointed to be leaving.
Moraine Lake is beautiful and we would rate it above any other site we saw in Canada during our 7 weeks of travelling in this beautiful country. The fact that you could stay there was in itself awesome. It was a good opportunity to take photos of the mountains in the morning light.
My most significant criticism was the staff. Don't get me wrong, in the most part they made every attempt to make your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible and they were all pleasant. The problem appears to be either the lack of experience in the staff or the management. At accommodation where you pay the sort of rates you pay at MLL, you expect a certain level of service. It is a level of service that I guess comes through training, experience and a good management team. There was a level of disorganisation and consistent inadequate standards (we probably wouldn't mind the odd blemish) that tarnished this accommodation with a fair degree of cheapness.
Sure, as other reviews have noted the crowds arrive between 10am and 5pm each day - it's wall to wall buses, cameras, and hikers. We didn't mind, but you might. At the end of the day the crowds disappear and you have the place to yourselves. We generally left the grounds each day anyway to tour around.
The cabins are lovely and rustic but VERY badly designed for travellers. They describe the cabins as architecturally designed. Unfortunately I found this to be true (that's a cheap shot at architects). There's insufficient space to store all your luggage (we have a fair bit when travelling internationally)
For the price you would also expect robes or slippers.
The restaurant was expensive and the food was OK but certainly not up to the standard you would expect from the price. In contrast, we went to the Post Hotel restaurant in Lake Louise. The meals there were marginally more expensive....but they were worth every cent and more. And the Post's service.....great... and the wine list.....I think we picked out the cheapest Pinot Noir on the list (not in any way cheap) and it was an excellent drop.
The breakfast (continential and included with room cost) was very basic. The hot breakfast shown on the menu was expensive, particularly if you weren't staying at the Lodge (we weren't tempted).
Our experience at Moraine Lake Lodge would have been great if we had paid $325-$375 per night but at the price we paid it was overpriced.
The lodge offers guided walks which we took up. If you haven't already trekked around the paths in the vicinity of the lodge then these are worthwhile....it wouldn't be great loss if you missed these.
The free canoe hire is worthwhile. We disembarked at points around the lake and this was a good way of taking in the lake experience.
In defence of MLL, they have delivered accommodation at a superb location that is open for only a restricted period of time every year. This restriction and its remoteness would contribute to running costs. It is a place to be appreciated.
If you were to improve management, increase pampering and services levels to guests, make the cabins larger and more practically designed and (cheeky suggestion) move the Post Hotel restaurant into the lodge the total package would resonate and I would be back every year, paying 50% more and feeling like I'm receiving great value. At the moment, the setting and the service at at two separate ends of the spectrum and as great as it is, I felt short changed. This level of contrast is frustrating and a shame.
Despite our disappointments I would still recommend staying here.
