“Wonderful Experience at the Post Hotel and Spa!”

We had a wonderful experience at the Post Hotel and Spa! This was our first visit to the hotel and our experience couldn't have been better. The staff was extremely welcoming and helpful throughout our stay. Although we didn't have an appointment, the spa was able to fit us in and I would highly recommend taking advantage of the spa services during a stay at the hotel. The rooms were very nicely appointed, although the many furnishings did make the room feel a bit cramped. However, we enjoyed the character of the room and its lodge decor and that it was not a cookie cutter replica of the rooms in so many hotels. The bathroom, in particular, was quite nicely appointed with a very large soaking tub as well as a large walk-in shower. The dining room and wine cellar at the hotel were one of the primary reasons that we chose to stay here on our vacation and we were not disappointed. Every meal that we had was fantastic and the wine list was exceptional. Although the hotel and the dining room were not cheap, we felt that we received great value for what we paid. Although the hotel rate is easily known, it might be a good idea to put a sample menu on the website so that future visitors would have an idea of both the variety of the menu as well as the range of meal costs.

I find it difficult to share the enthusiasm of other reviews of the Post Hotel. On the positive side, it is very comfortable, has a pleasant alpine quasi-Swiss ambiance of warm wood, with nice but not overly-large rooms, but lacking a refrigerator, and very good bathrooms. The property is very well-maintained by an army of workers. The front desk and restaurant staff are welcoming and friendly. BUT, there are two significant minuses. First, the only reason that one goes to Lake Louise is the lake, and the Post Hotel is several miles from the lake, in an unprepossessing location at the edge of a stream. Nice, but nothing special. Second, the prices. At $300 the standard rooms are expensive, but that is nothing compared to the prices in the restaurant. The Post Hotel has pretensions to culinary and oenological grandeur, as though what it lacks in terms of location and scenery it tries to make up for with wine and food. Is that why people go to Lake Louise? Of course not. Nevertheless, one is asked to pay staggering prices for meals, even at breakfast, where a couple of boiled eggs and cereal can end up costing one little short of $50. A glass of orange juice costs $6.50! Dinner prices are similarly stratospheric. In brief, although my stay at the Post was comfortable, I felt I was paying through the nose for something that was not particularly special.

We stayed at the Post Hotel over the Family Day long weekend. We have been before, and it was excellent. The Post Hotel has not changed a bit. It is the best hotel in Lake Louise, the best hotel I have ever stayed at. The staff are excellent, nothing is too much to ask. The rooms are clean and the fireplace is great. The main dining room is a good bet, expensive but good. The Outpost Pub is another option, the food is not as good as the dining room but you pay less and its a more relaxed atmosphere.

It is expensive though. Be prepared to pay $8.50 for a piece of cake. $3.50 for Hot Coco. But its not like you are over paying, you are paying for the best experiance. If you want a bargain, go some where else. If you want the best, stay here.

Stayed here on our honeymoon and absolutely loved it! Our suite was beautiful and clean. The service was excellent. The hotel's restaurant was expensive but worth it. Would definitely stay here again!

I have read through a few of the reviews and can say that most of the good things of the Post are noted here and there and many of the negative as well. I have stayed here on a few ocassions, most recently in June/07 for 3 nights. Generally I find it a nice property. It's location is what used to be Lake Louise town centre with the main road to the lake running directly through what is now the parking lot. The hotel started as a very small building with shared baths and was expanded 15 or 20 years ago when the road was relocated to its present location. The "village" of Lake Louise was relocated as well and now is made up of a strip mall. (unfortunate but true). Whats nice is the cosy alpine lodge feel, tasteful furnishings and a location that is away from the constant traffic to and from the lake. Yes there are trains, but this is the history of the park and of the Canadian rockies and the lack of level crossings (as there was in the old village) means the trains do not whistle. The dining room and the food is top notch. I tend to like the rooms and their somewhat rustic feel. But there are some draw backs...read on.

What I don't like (aside from the pricing which is typical of the Rockies) is numerous and if the hotel would take the time to correct these it would help. The pool closes at 9:00pm. Please remember that in the summer it is broad daylight until almost 11:00pm. We came in from a long hike and lingered in the bar for a drink or two, went up to the room and changed to enjoy the hot tub only to find it was CLOSED. (we were at the pool door at 9:05) I went to the desk and asked ..why?...the answer was a surly..."thats when we always close it" (you stupid tourist or at least an underlying tone to that effect). Frankly the front desk was just a unpleasant expereince from the get go. Almost the attitude that says...you are here again? The front desk staff, dispite me trying to friendly and smiling when approaching them, were virtually all unsmiling atomitons...almost to the point of being gruff.

The dining room service is spoty...sometimes they won't leave you alone, sometimes you can't get any one's attention short of getting up and going to find them.

The morning coffee and tea is self serve located in a cupboard mid way down the corridor on each floor. For $400 plus per night I want it in my room.

Finally if you are Canadian and have like most of us become very used to paying for virtually everything on your bank debit card...be fore-warned the Post is the only place anywhere in the Canadian Rockies I found that did not take them. In fact when I presented it for payment on check out the clerk looked at it curiously, walked back to some little room (manager no doubt) both she and he then spent 5 minutes chatting and looking at me as if I was about to bolt and not pay for the bill. She finaly came back and spat out ..."we don't take these kind of cards"...as if it had some sort of plague attached to it.

Needless to say, despite what I like about the place, next time back I will be scoping out the Chateau once again. Haven't stay there in many years...perhaps Fairmont has their act together.
