Lake Louise Inn is conveniently located about 1/4 mile from the only small strip mall (Samson Mall) in Lake Louise. This is convenient because the mall contains two good breakfast options and is where many tour outfits pick up and drop off passengers.
We found the hotel room itself to be sufficiently clean and roomy. We booked a room on the first floor with two queen beds for six nights in September 2008. A refrigerator, coffee maker, and hair dryer all came with the room. (The coffee maker uses individual coffee pods that makes extremely weak coffee that drips into a styrofoam cup. The hotel ran out of these cups on the second day and we had to make do with flimsy plastic cups.)
Our complaints were with the indifferent service we received at the front desk, the truly poor service in one of the three restaurants located on the premises, and with the frustratingly incorrect information in the hotel guest information book.
The guest information book in our room said the laundromat took quarters only and that change could be obtained at the front desk. I rose early one morning to do laundry before hitting the trail and headed to the front desk to get the quarters. The receptionist didn't have change and didn't know where I could get any. I was lucky and exchanged some bills for quarters from one of the waitresses in the downstairs restaurant. I took my change and my laundry to the laundromat (one of three on premises) but realized the machines required "loonies" ($1.00 coins) and quarters. A sign in the laundromat said there was a change machine in another hotel building unit, so off I went looking for the machine. The machine was out of order and had been for some time, so back I went to the restaurant. 45 minutes later I finally obtained the coins I needed.
There are three places to eat on the hotel premises: a bar on the lower level, a pizza and pasta joint on the upper level, and a nicer restaurant on the main level. We did not eat at the bar but had three dinners at the pizza joint and one dinner at the nicer restaurant. Dinner at the pizza joint will cost two people approximately $50. Expect to pay at least $80 for dinner in the nicer restaurant. However, there aren't too many options in town and the location was convenient, so we opted to eat here more than we normally would have had there been more options.
Our guest information book said the pizza joint was open every night until 10:00 pm. We confirmed this with the front desk the first evening we planned on eating there. That evening we went to the pizza joint at 8:50 pm but they said they were closed for a special event. We ended up eating Power Bars in our room. The second evening we tried again and received the worst service in recent memory. I could see the kitchen area from where I sat and watched our spahetti plates sitting under the hot lamps for 15 minutes before the waitress brought them to our table. We waited 10 minutes for our wine (after it was poured) to be delivered, and I had to ask the waitress for our check because it took so long for her to bring it. The spaghetti was watery and very average. I almost always leave a 15 - 20% tip but didn't this time.
The meal we had at the nicer restaurant on the main level was quite good (and fairly pricey, as is all food in Lake Louise.) This restaurant also serves a buffet breakfast for $16.00. While the breakfast is quite hearty it is definitely overpriced. You would be better off going 1/4 mile up the road to The Trailhead (open at 7:00 am) or the bakery (open at 6:00 am) where you will pay $10 for breakfast. The Trailhead can get quite busy so go early or be prepared to wait in line.
We reserved our room at a discounted rate but even with the discount I thought the hotel was overpriced. When we checked in the receptionist was going to overcharge us by $90 per night for our room. To be fair, she quickly corrected the error when we pointed out our reserved rate. There aren't too many options in Lake Louise and you are only minutes from some of the most beautiful scenery in North America. Just don't expect service with a smile or for the location to come cheaply.
