Rooms are clean, kitchen is small but adequate. Overall this is a nice hostel but it has 2 problems.

1. It is home to 20-30 ski resort staff who call this place home for the winter. Although I'm sure the majority of these guests are quiet, clean and respectfully I didn't meet those people. I was in a room with two guys who worked at the hill and the room was a disaster. Walking in it was difficult to get to my bed as there were dirty clothes and junk strewn across the floor.

The other problem with these guests is they treat the hostel as their home. That includes loud parties where drunken people stumble from room to room.

2. There is a bar in the hostel. This probably wouldn't be a problem in most hostels but when combined with 1 it does cause problems. When the bar closes forget about quite after 11pm as you will be woken by the loud dunked bar patrons making their way back to their rooms. If you're really lucky you'll be sharing your room with one of these individuals who after stumbling in and being surprised to see people sleeping in formerly empty beds they will pull down your covers and shine a flash light in your eyes to figure out who you are.

This is a nice hostel, it's the people who stay there that make it less then desirable. Maybe visiting in the summer would yield better results. As for a winter visit I would not recommend this hostel.

Great, fun hostel in Banff... the rooms were clean, the shared bathrooms were spacious and always clean and the on site bar and restaurant were great. Would definitely stay here again!

“Love the cleanliness”

I've stayed at the Banff International Hostel in 2003 and 2004. I couldn't get in last year to stay. Tjhis year I'm going in about 2 days, and I can't wait! Every time I stay there it's always clean and the people are friendly.

The 2 kitchens they have are enormously big, and lots of room to cook your meals. They have barbeques to use also. They even have a great restaurant also!

The place is one of the best I've ever stayed at. I've travelled to Banff for 7 years in a row now, and I always make it a point to stay there if I can.

Make sure that if you go to Banff, you stay at the international hostel, you won't regret it!

One of the best hostels I've ever stayed in. It is second only to Sydney Central YHA in my humble opinion. My girlfriend and I stayed here for six nights in July 2004 whilst touring Canada, I can honestly say it was a joyful experience. I would recommend it to any sort of traveller - just fantastic.

“The only place to stay”

HI-Banff Alpine Centre

What a great hostel. It may be a little way out of town (and up a pretty big hill) but there is a cheap bus and taxis are readily available. I also walked it a number of times and being a bit out of town you are often rewarded with wildlife such as deer and elk.

The building itself is like an alpine lodge. It has a nice, if basic, bar/restaurant which is perfect for watching the game with a cold on and a plate of nachos. The other communal areas, including a spacious lounge and huge kitchen/dining room, are more than adequate.

As others have mentioned the staff are very helpful (once was struggling up the hill with lots of shopping and one of them stopped to give me a lift!) and the events they organise are a great way to get to know the town and your fellow residents. And not all of them are drink related, we once had a very interesting talk on wolves and bears in the area.

Another point worth mentioning are the employment seekers packages. Not only do you get a reduced rate but also access to an answer phone system which is very useful if you are waiting to hear back from prospective employers. Also if you are applying to work at Sunshine Village ski resort (which I advise you to do if you are after a ski season job) the interviews are held at the hostel which is very convenient.

Overall this place gets a big thumbs up from me.
