“Welcoming and friendly staff.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2013 via mobile

My husband and I arrived at the HI-Banff hostel on Thursday 29 August. We were unsure of what sightseeing and activities we could do on the Friday. Since we had limited time, we asked Will who was working the reception desk if he could advise us on sights to see. We asked Will could he please write up an itinerary of things to do because there was so much to see and do in the Banff area (so that we weren't back tracking and wasting time). Having a hire car was an advantage. On the Saturday, we were then heading to Jasper. Will also advised on the sights on what to see along the way. Thank you Will for going out of your way for us. Good Luck in wherever life takes you. Your friendly and helpful assistance is greatly appreciated. Keep up the good work. Stuart & Louise Goodwin

We loved it here. The private room was fine but it was the staff, atmosphere and facilities that made this place for me. Fun pub in the basement, great little restaurant, bottomless coffee... Stunning location, a brisk 15 minute walk from town but we didn't mind that. The only thing I would say is that they need more staff in the restaurant - one poor guy was doing the cooking, taking the orders and doing the till all by himself! I would really recommend this hostel though.

I loved staying at this hostel. It has more of a hotel feel about it, except with bunk beds. The room was spacious, had gigantic lockers, comfortable beds and included a private washroom, not including a shower but the showers are very private and clean. The staff were extremely helpful at the front desk and the wi-fi works great. For a $5 deposit, they provide you with a bus pass that gets you into and around town as much as you like and then refund the $5 when you return the pass. Bus arrives every 40 minutes and takes you directly into town within 5 minutes and it's about a $8-10 cab ride as well. My only criticisms with this hostel is the restaurant, Cougar Petes, located in the main building. The food is decent, but only if they have any. Each time I went to eat here they were out of what I wanted to order (burgers, chicken, bagels, coffee) and they're incredibly understaffed! With busy morning or afternoon rushes, there was only 1 guy in the entire place, taking orders, cooking and then fixing up bills, which gets a bit annoying, especially when theres so many people. Otherwise, great hostel! I'd definitely stay again!

We booked in advance to stay in one of the private cabins next to the hostel. For us it was the best of both worlds. We got the facilities of the hostel including a full kitchen however we had private accommodation with en-suite.
Our cabin had everything we needed without any unnecessary frills. The beds weren't the most comfortable but they weren't the worst. The bathroom was small but fully functional. The cabin also included a little sitting area and TV. The kitchen in the hostel was full equipped and really functional.
The big negative of the Banff Alpine Centre would be the location, which is a bit of a way out of central Banff. In many respects it was nice to be out of town, but it did necessitate driving.
For the price we were paying compared to other accommodation Banff we were really happy with the cabin.

Room Tip: The private cabins book out quickly in high season

I had a room meant for four just for me. Four in that room would have been a nightmare. Shared bath not too bad ... if yours is full you can go to another floor. Staff is amazingly friendly, and although the place is too far from town to walk, they do provide bus tickets to ride the city bus. All in all, a place mainly for twenty-somethings, but absolutely great as a "regrouping' one night stand on a trip from arrival at Calgary airport for eventual travel to Lake Louise and Jasper.

Room Tip: Get a private room (esp if you are over 30), otherwise you will experience a "hostal" envi...

As far as HI hostels it was fairly standard and that is high compared to other hostels.
We had our own room and they were nice enough. Good cooking facilities, good location - away from the madness of town.

The hostel itself is very good. I liked the accommodation and general cleaning. But I really was very disappointed with the reception. We arrived around 11 pm, really tired, because we did trails in the parks all day, and we had to wait 30 minutes to attend us because they were changing shift. When we were finally attended the receptionist took about half an hour to do our check in, ie, almost 50 minutes to get in the room! When we arrived in our room, another surprise, had no towel. When we ask for towels to the receptionist he simply said that they had no more towels because they were overcrowded. Not even told if they were already solving the problem, or if we would have towels soon. Basically: we do not have towels, deal with it. The guy did not say that, but it was basically what seemed to me, because the guy was very rude to us. Seriously, I do not care if it is holiday and if they are full, they have to be prepared to attend the guests and the number of people they can accommodate. It is the minimum necessary. After insisting to the receptionist he gave us small towels (face), was not the best but at least we could take a shower. Luckily, another employee arrived with the bath towels 10 minutes latter. And day shitf guy was not very nice with us too. In general, the place is good, but I think they should training their staff to attend the people better.

Hi RDPMS,

Thanks for your comments regarding our hostel and the cleanliness of the facility. I`m very sorry about your check-in experience the night you arrived; we certainly have enough towels to go around for everyone, but our housekeeping team was behind with the laundry and our Night staff certainly didn`t go a very good job of conveying this information to you.

Your comment will be shared at our next Front Desk meeting to ensure our team members know how this sort of experience can negatively affect our guests. Once again, thank you for letting us know.
