First, I want to add that the quality of this lodge is poor. Its old, dirty furniture and sink, and small. 2nd, when you check in, the owner is on the phone socializing as she's checking you in. Then the scamming begins when she tells you her credit card machine isn't working and you need to pay cash. Don't fall for this, bc she will then charge your credit card and there's no proof you gave her cash. I didn't fall for it, after all im from NYC lol, but it can happen, so I'm warning people via trip advisor. So then, when her scam didn't work, the next day I check out. 2 days later she leaves me a nasty vm claiming I stole a whole towel set! lol. Charged me $29! I called her back, and she was literally arguing with me, accusing me of stealing her towels! Yelling on the phone. I had to fight the charge on my credit card and it was't easy. So, my advice to you, STAY AWAY from elkhorn lodge!!!!

We looked around downtown Banff for accomodations since we hadn't made room reservations ahead of time. Besides being expensive, downtown also seemed a little too trafficy with both vehicles and tourists, so decided to head south on Banff Avenue. We went over a bridge onto Spray Ave and came across the Elkhorn Lodge. It looked like a relatively quiet location compared to the downtown area so checked on room availability. They had large suites w/1 or 2 bedrooms, kitchen, livroom, fireplace, etc but we opted for one of their queen bed, cable TV, coffee maker & small fridge rooms. Sounded quit reasonable at first $125, but then you add on a 2% tourism enhancement fee, 5% GST, 4% provincial tourism levy... well you do the math. Our room was quite small but was clean, had WiFi and the parking was free. The lady that ran it wasn't overly friendly but was efficient. The location turned out to be quiet for sleeping and good for checking out Banff. It was only about a 10 minute walk to all the downtown Banff restaurants, bars and shopping. And only about a 3 block walk up Spray Ave to the famous and immense Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, a historic Canadian Pacific Railway chateau which was about as impressive as the Prince of Wales hotel in Waterton.

We spent two nights in this hotel which we had booked online. It wasn't quite what we expected. Calling it rustic is stretching it a little. True the original lodge is old but the updates are only outdated. Our whole room needed to be brought into this century, pretty well new everything is needed from carpet to bathroom it even smelled dated and the swag lamp was just plain ugly. Now for the good part the bed is comfortable and everything is clean. We slept well in this quiet location and the parking is free and plentiful. If you don't go modern or expensive in Banff then this is what you get:)

The location is good, we walked to town for breakfast and dinner and up to the Banff Springs Hotel for a coffee. There is a lovely walk to the falls from very close to the hotel and trails and paths that will take you all the way into the mountains if you are feeling fit.

Room Tip: Get an upper room if you can, the stairs may be a disadvantage but it will be quieter up there.

We booked here for one night in one of the basic rooms #9. Disappointed considering it cost us $167 (incl. taxes) for something so basic. It was old and the decor was out dated, and had a musty old smell to it. The positive is that it was clean. So clean that the towels smells like bleach. There's no common room like a motel. The manager Ulla was friendly in the beginning of our stay, though she became a bit unpleasant when we mistakenly sat on one of the private porches. Her unpleasant mannerism left a poor impression on the lodge/motel. A better alternative would be a B &B or motel. Overall, poor value.

  • Liked — Clean, but your money can go farther for what your'e getting
  • Disliked — room old and musty, poor service

We stayed in Banff for 3 nights. Elkhorn lodge is ideally located just over the bridge from the main Banff street. This means a short stroll (10 minutes) in to town and no noise at night. The owner was really helpful. We stayed in room #9 which was one of the basic ones. It was really comfortable with good bed and it's own en-suite. Banff and the area also has so much to offer. Although no food is included in the price, there are lots of good places to eat in Banff.

  • Liked — quiet, peaceful, clean, close to town
  • Disliked — nothing
