“Lovely Cabin, Great Location, Friendly Hosts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2013

My wife and I met in Banff 12 years ago and we're married 6 years ago. Our trip to Banff was a very late honeymoon we had always wanted to take. The log cabin was lovely and worked out perfectly for us. It's a small cabin but so long as you are eating in town it has everything you need, is cozy, has it's own bathroom and a counter top with fridge for basic kitchen needs. Location wise I think it's perfect if you're there to visit the surrounding area and be close to town at the same time. You're a short walk over a bridge to town, as well as to the Banff Springs Hotel, but your staying in a quiet neighborhood location with a river you can walk to 5 minutes.

There was a fair amount of mosquitos outside at the time of year we were staying (Aug) but the windows had screens on them so it was fine and mosquitoes come with the surrounding area.

The hosts (Malcolm and Sharon) are a friendly couple who really looked after us in many ways and offered good advice on where to go around the area. They made muffins and fruit every morning served with juice and coffee, and the room comes with a large selection of teas. My wife and I are both vegan, and they were very accommodating to make the muffins without eggs which we really appreciated and they tasted great. We very much enjoyed our time there.

This is a cute and cozy log cabin that is rustic only in décor. Set in a residential area next to the owners' much larger log cabin style home (see notes about location below), it has a comfortable bed, nice bathroom, small table and 2 chairs, and partial kitchen (fridge, sink, microwave, dishes etc.) that is stocked with supplies for various hot drinks. There is also a tiny porch with table and chair where it would have been nice to sit if only the mosquitoes weren't out in force.
Sharon and Malcolm were very welcoming and helpful (even lending us bear spray!), and we felt very pampered by the breakfast brought to the cabin each morning on (literally) a silver platter. Sharon's homemade muffins were delicious, as was the fresh fruit salad. More pampering came in the evening when we found Perrier water on the counter in an ice bucket and chocolates on our pillows. There were also plush bathrobes in the closet to use after shower or bath.
The cabin is just out of town but only a short walk or drive to town or to the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel (which has several places to eat). It's also easy to get to the "must-see" sights outside of Banff.
Banff was having a hot weather spell while we were there so the cabin was a little too warm even though we turned off the heat (normally it would probably be perfect for cool mornings and nights). We needed to keep the window and blinds open by the bed, which resulted in feeling a loss of privacy because that window faces the driveway shared by the owners and the b&b guests. There were a couple of times that the owner or a child stood near the window for a couple of minutes when we were there--of course they did not look in the cabin, but it felt a little awkward to me. This would not be an issue in cooler weather, when you would keep the window and blinds closed. Another thing that should be noted about the location is that the cabin is not isolated from other homes (the photo on the website suggested isolation to me, which is one reason I wanted to stay there). We were there for 5 nights and there were several times when there were kids playing on a trampoline next door, not far from the cabin's door and porch. It wasn't a problem since we were gone most of the day and they went inside at night, but it was a surprise since I had expected a more isolated location. The other noise issue was a neighbor's truck that woke me up quite early most mornings, but again that might not be an issue with the window closed--or you could bring earplugs just in case. I am a light sleeper so this might not even bother other people.
Another small issue was that our towels were not changed until I requested a change after 3 days. This may have been an environmental issue, but I did not see a note about this (as you do see in many hotels these days) so I assumed they would be changed. Once I made a request for a change, they were replaced each day.
My final note is that there was no comfortable place inside the cabin to sit and read--just the bed or the chairs for breakfast. There really is no room for a large chair or sofa, and it's not a big deal because most people who stay there will spend most of their days and probably evenings away from the cabin. We just noticed this more because we were there for so long and would have liked to relax inside the cabin occasionally.

When we first read this review we were disappointed, because we go out of our way to try and make our guests feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible, and we want everyone to enjoy their time in Banff. There were many positive comments which we appreciate too. However, after looking at the other comments (left for other businesses) made by this guest, we realise that faired very well - LOL.

So we would like to take this opportunity to respond to a few details:

"The Banff Log Cabin is located in an exclusive residential area, in a quiet crescent with off street parking" clearly stated on the home page of our web site. We are not located in an isolated area in the middle of the woods. If we were, our guests would not enjoy a 6 min walk to the Banff Springs Hotel or 10 minute walk to down town or the Bow Falls. We apologize if guests assume that we are isolated due to the photo on our web site, but it is a real photo, not changed in any way, and we are trying to show the best side of our cabin.

For about 2 months of the summer (if we are lucky) it is hot in Banff, and we do not have air conditioning in the cabin (real log cabins do not have air conditioning). However we have a fan in the cabin during this time, and we have an additional window fan that we can easily put in place if our cabin guests need more cool air. Some guests like to be cooler than others, we like to accommodate individual requirements if our guests let us know.

Yes we had alot of mosquitoes in Banff this year due to the heavy rain in June. I provide "Citronella candles" for those who like to enjoy a glass of wine on the deck, insect repellant and cream for bug bites. Again we like our cabin guests to be comfortable.

There are 2 places to sit and enjoy breakfast, a glass of wine or a read a book: the small outside deck (please see our video on the web site) and the table and chairs inside the cabin. We do not have a sofa - sorry. Our cabin is a real cabin, it is not huge and we have tried to make the most of the space we have.

Privacy, we like to give our guests privacy. So on the main window of the cabin we have blinds that can be angled and curtains that can be drawn. We also have hanging baskets on all 4 exterior corners of the cabin that need watering every day in the summer. We try to water these plants when we think you our guests are not in the cabin to protect their privacy, but sometimes it is hard to tell if our guests are in or out. Watering our flowers takes about 10 mins so we apologize if this makes guests feel uncomfortable.

Lasty, towels not being changed - I am mortified! If a towel does not look like it has been used we don't change it, if a towel is hung up we assume that the guests don't want us to change it because they are considering the environment. We also have additonal towels on a shelf in the wardrobe for those guests that do like to change towels more frequently.

We will continue to do our best and welcome guests from all over the world to enjoy a real log cabin experience in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. It has been a real pleasure to meet so many wonderful people from different cultures and see their excitement when they arrive in Banff.

We stayed at Banff Log Cabin B&B from 2 July to 5 July. We very much enjoyed the lovely and cozy log cabin. Sharon and Malcolm are great hosts, very friendly and helpful, and they pay attention to many small details that make the stay in the cabin stand out. Sharon's muffins are excellent, Malcolm's pancake delicious and the fruit bowls accompanying the tasty coffee another treat. The very nicely furnished cabin has all one needs: comfortable beds, clean bathroom and shower, mini fridge, WLAN, nice porch to sit outside (e.g. for breakfast) and a convenient location within a 3-minute walk from downtown, yet very quite. Do not miss this spot, when you are in Banff!

We stayed at Sharon and Malcolm's lovely Log Cabin to complete our vacation of western Canada. His workmanship and attention to detail in the restoration of the building were outstanding. The cabin is quiet, clean, super convenient to all the places you want to go. It has everything you need. Comfy beds, mini fridge, microwave, and chocolate on the pillows! The breakfast is wonderful. We had the waffles one day and apple cinnamon muffins the next. Malcolm recommeded great hikes at Lake Louise, Moraine Lake and Johnston Canyon. In addition his recommendations for flatbread at the Fairmont, dinner at The Bison and beverages at the Banff Brewery downtown were spot on. I would recommend them and their cabin to all. :)

We stayed at Sharon and Michael's lovely Log Cabin to kick off our honeymoon. It was perfect. The cabin is quiet, clean and has everything you need. Comfy beds, and chocolate on the pillows! The breakfast is delightful. Stay at least 2 days to make sure you can get pancakes one day and muffins the next. :)

Romantic, hygienic, and comfortable. The homemade pancakes were really delicious. Malcolm & Sharon are extremely friendly hosts and very helpful especially when we were in face of the bad weather in Banff during our stay. Sharon offered her help in trying to find another accommodation for us if we need any, and stayed in touch with us to make sure we were safe even after we left their cabin. In case we are going to Banff again in the near future, I would not hesitate to choose this accommodation over the others!!

My wife and I had a fantastic time in Banff National Park and the foundation for our experience began each day in the beautifully quaint and rustic Banff log cabin. It was everything we had hoped it would be and more.

Our hosts Sharon and Malcolm Carmichael were the perfect combination of friendly, kind, and helpful while repecting our privacy. The breakfasts each morning were fabulous and helped jump start each busy day we had planned. Malcolm was very helpful in providing tips about sightseeing and is a great resource for local history.

They have covered all the bases in the cabin. The room is super clean, comfortable, with free wi-fi access, cable tv, and my wife appreciated the charm and attention to every detail. Wow! What a great time we had!
