We went to banff in 1990 on our honeymoon (skiing). Always said we wanted to go back in the summer. 22 years later we returned. It is such a beautiful place. The mountains are just "peakier" than the Colorado Rockies. The trees so dense that from afar, they look like a well manicured lawn at the bottom of the mountains. The rivers and streams were flowing rapidly and created so many impromptu waterfalls falling from cliffs. And the wildlife! We saw a total of 14 bears (brown, black and Grizzly), Elk, bighorn sheep, and of course the chipmunks. I highly recommend traveling in late June before the crowds show up. Try the Johnston Canyon hike, Stewart Canyon hike, Gondola to top of Sulphur Mountain and Hoodoo trail. Town is adorable but stay at a place outside of town to keep things more peaceful.
