“Juniper Get-Away”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2012

Our get-away was for my husband and I for a weekend. It was a surprise. We booked 2 nights at the Juniper. We had stayed there once before. This is a very interestingly decorated hotel, with many earthy touches, stonework, beautiful artwork, and has a cozy feel. The rooms are fairly small and the bathroom is nothing special. The view is incredible of the mountains and the food quality is superb. We enjoyed the hot tub as it is very private. Had a very relaxing weekend. Overall this hotel is very nice, understated and affordable. You cannot compare with upscale hotels like Banff Springs or Rimrock however. It is meant for adults as the floors are hardwood underneath the carpet so they crackle when walking on it at times. Would recommend with understanding of the type of hotel this is. It's just off the highway which is nice but can be a little noisy as well.

Room Tip: All rooms are nice from a "view" perspective but expect some highway noise.

I just spent the weekend in Banff with my boyfriend and we both loved the Juniper Hotel. Our room had a spectacular panoramic view of Banff and the mountains that couldn't be beat. The room was clean and the bed was very comfortable. We enjoyed the hot tub twice on Saturday night and had a great breakfast in the dining room on Sunday morning. Downtown Banff is just a short, $10 cab ride away. If you are looking for peace and tranquility, this is the hotel for you!

Room Tip: Spend the extra money and get the room with the view. It's well worth it!

The rooms were spotless......the staff was wonderful......but it was very noisy, dogs barking, babies crying and you could hear every footstep in the hallway! Sound proofing was not at the top of the list when this place was built......would I return? Yes! Just for the clean rooms alone I would return.....good job housekeeping team! (just a note: your stays should not be started so early in the morning!) I am an animal lover but barking dogs do not belong in a Hotel!

I booked this hotel based on the hotel ratings here in Tripadvisor. I booked 3 days back in march 2012. We were nestled just outside of Banff, and our room had a great view of Mt. Norquay. Its not so pretty on the eyes on the outside, but once you step inside the hotel its so beautiful. Never judge a book by its cover. Our rooms were clean, neat, and tidy. Also make sure to take advantage of the outdoor hottub especially after a day a skiing/snowboarding. Although I found the hotels restaurant extremely expensive. Since we weren't within walking distance to the town and my travel buddies were to lazy to head into town we had no choice but settle for the hotel restaurant. I had a speghetti that was $26.00 (NOT WORTH IT). You're money is better spent eating at a higher quality restaurant like the "Maple Leaf" in Banff.

I am surprised by some of the negative reviews on this site regarding this hotel. I can only put it down to the wide diversity of people who travel through a tourist town like Banff, and their differing expectations. I can state emphatically that during our recent stay at the Juniper Hotel we had only positive experiences to report.

To start, I'd like to emphasize that we were staying at the Juniper on a Groupon coupon, which indicates that we were in no way staying on a high end ticket or getting any special consideration. The hotel is located on ridge line to the north of the Trans-Canada Highway, immediately outside the townsite boundaries for Banff. A little tricky to find the entrance, particularly in the dark. Paying attention to signs while arriving is important (we used a GPS to find the place). Average looking from the outside, this hotel is a renovated 1960's motor lodge. Surprisingly, only limited renos were done to the outside of the building (a deliberate decision, apparently, to recognize the unique 60's architecture). Inside, however the hotel was gutted and rebuilt. and the design and furnishings are quite pleasant.

We arrived late after driving through some nasty winter weather. We were promptly checked in (note, there are stairs and no elevator in this hotel, mobility impaired guests should ask for assistance with luggage). We were famished after a long trip, and though we arrived 10 minutes before the restaurant closed, we were promptly seated and served even though it kept the wait and cook staff working after hours. We ate at this restaurant for most of our meals, and both service and food was excellent (note: it is a little pricey, the bar menu has cheaper items).

The room itself had a magnificent view of the townsite and Bow River Valley (note, a few rooms have their views blocked by trees, likely through no fault of the hotel, cutting trees in a national park to enhance guest views is likely not on, ask if that is an issue). The furnishings and bed were modern and comfortable, the bathroom likewise. All the standard room amenities were present, and the room very quiet, aside from a surprising number of children running about earlier in the evening. We had a very comfortable time during our entire stay.

Any negatives are very minor. The location is a bit awkward. It lies at the base of Norquay mountain, making it ideal for skiers at the Norquay ski resort but a bit isolated from the rest of Banff (you might be able to walk to and from in the summer, but it's a long hike and a car is a virtual necessity). As noted previously the restaurant is a bit pricey, though the food is excellent and ample. There is no pool or other family type diversions, and young ones may get a bit bored (scenery and atmosphere notwithstanding).

Overall, this hotel provides excellent service. I was truly impressed with the "green" ethos reflected in the hotel. Also impressive was a noted pride in the history of the hotel, it's structural uniqueness, and the local First Nations history and archaeological significance of the site on which the hotel is built. They even have a little museum type display extending down the hallway to the restaurant. The staff were uniformly pleasant and helpful, the rooms comfortable, and overall ambiance excellent. We would highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Request a room with a valley view, inquire over possible view obstructions.

We stayed there for a weekend escape and it was really relaxing. It is only few minutes drive out of Baff city center and hidden in the Mount Norquay foothill. Great location, quite surrounding, beautiful scenery and yet still close to everything, food, shopping, hot spring, hiking trail all within 5-10 minutes driving time. Love it!

Room Tip: Room facing the highway has a better view of the mountain.

A very Japanese feel to the room decor with gorgeous wood floors and headboards. The spa has a perfect view of Mt. Norquay. The rooms all had perfect views of Mt. Norquay. The staff was particularly helpful.
