“Don't miss this, if you have a car.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

Absolutely beautiful. Drive slowly and stop frequently to enjoy. Although the parkway is across the river from the Trans-Can, you are in a completely different world.

“Bow Valley Parkway and Johnson Canyon”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2013

BVP is a nice quieter drive for us from parts of the world who drive on the other side of the road :) Along the way you can stop at Johnson's Canyon which we did and we walked all the way to the upper fall lookout (about 4-5kms). There is a shorter walk to the lower walks which has more rails and easy for those with less walking ability. That's about 2 kms or thereabouts for the return on easier terrain. We did the return walk in just over 2 hours at a moderate to fast pace. Very well sign posted and only one track to follow so can't get lost. It is very beautiful with lots of scenic photo shots. I believe there are about 7 waterfalls in all which when we went were all naturally frozen. IN Winter it has it's own scenery and we can also imagine in spring/summer how beautiful it would also be with all the waterfalls running. Well worth the stop. We also did a very good guided ice canyon tour of Maligne Canyon nearer Jasper and that was great two.
For these types of walks in winter - layer up (although on the walk to the top you can unzipper the layers while you are getting warm from walking). Have good shoes. Gloves and beanies and jacket too. Big help in all snow/cold weather related activities are toe and hand warmers - GREAT invention and about $2-3 a pair and last the day. They make a BIG difference.
Another tip is to hire some cleats (if you don't have boots with really good grip) from a local ski rental store for any snow or icy walking activities - make a massive difference. We just put them on over our hiking shoes. SImple. Cost only about $20 for a couple of days for 2 people.
Another place to stop is Numa Falls - worth a 5 minute get out of the car in winter to get to the bridge and take a photo shot. There is also another canyon in the region which we didn't have time to walk to. A good drive clsoe to Banff to get out amongst the Rockies and the beautfiul scenery it has to offer - spectacular those Rockies!
