“Nice resort on outskirts of Banff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2012

We spent three enjoyable days at Hidden Ridge Resort with several friends, who were visiting from South Africa and Australia. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the resort is clean and well maintained. Our room was large and comfortable with a balcony. We had free underground covered parking.

When we checked in, there was no record of the booking for one couple in our party. The staff were very responsive and apologetic, and gave this couple an upgraded suite, a duplex with two bedrooms and bathrooms which was very spacious.

The resort is located at the top of a hill a few minutes drive from the centre of Banff. We went into Banff for meals, as there are no eating facilities on site.

We recommend the resort as a pleasant place from which to explore Banff and surroundings.

We had booked a week long stay in the one bedroom with two queens. We chose this property based on accessibility to Banff restaurants and the fact that it had a kitchen to make a daily breakfast. Our unit was on the ground floor. The downside was that 4 to 6 twenty somethings were staying above us. Their drinking began in the early afternoon and continued until about 3am. Fighting, carrying-on, stomping up and down the stairs along with yelling - ruined our experience at this gem. I strongly suggest that you request the second story if you book a one bedroom. This will also give you a lovely balcony to overlook the super cute property. Note that parking is TIGHT. We are a hiking family and always returned home after dinner. This meant being forced to park in the garage rather than near our unit. My husband is a pool lover and he found morning swims to be overrun with the diaper clad toddler set. The evening time had a more adult atmosphere. I did like the convenience of the kitchen and the laundry facilities in the main building. Everything was very clean. Lastly, I must add that the front desk staff was exceptional, as were the cleaning and maintenance staff. After complaining about the drunken noise, the manager, Barry was very concerned and apologetic. He epitomized professionalism and hospitality. Ultimately he did kindly release us from our package deal and thus we continued on to a more sophisticated adult environment in Lake Louise.

Room Tip: Choose the second story if booking the one bedroom!

Beautiful views of the mountains in every direction. Far enough away from town to have privacy and a great view, but close enough to access Banff and all it has to offer. Only takes about 10 minutes to walk to the centre of town, but the bus was also convenient! There is a great little restaurant down the street called Cilantro located in a log cabin that serves wood fired pizzas and has great service. We have also stayed in the centre of town but preferred this location, it had a more genuine mountain lodge feel as the rooms have fireplaces and are very private. It was an amazing place to stay!

Room Tip: The loft apartments with 2 bedrooms have heaps of room. Request one that is facing town for the best...

We recently stayed in a loft with 2 queen beds in the loft (kids loved), and one queen bed downstairs. The room was spacious although very warm our first day there with the windows closed which we opened. The staff was attentive and helpful.
Its stationed near town,it's only a I5 through 20 minute walk or five minute drive.

Room Tip: Consider the loft style rooms for extra space.

Overall the Hidden Ridge Resort is a very nice place to stay. We stayed in a 2BR loft, which had a king-size bed in the loft and a queen in each of the two rooms in the basement. Resort is located on top of Tunnel Mountain, and offers nice views of the surrounding peaks. About a five minute drive from downtown Banff. Following are the highlights. Plusses include:
• Very roomy arrangement on ground floor. Plenty of space for several couples or a large family.
• Relatively new buildings, and furnishings are relatively new as well.
• Nice wood burning fireplace provides great ambiance. Free wood provided.
• Potentially good views from your back porch, depending on your unit.
• Polite and professional staff.
• Washer and dryer on location (but not in units).
• Comfortable beds.
• Wildlife is often seen in the immediate area including elk and deer.
Drawbacks include:
• Loft space is quite tight – not much room for luggage or moving around.
• RV/Trailer lot next door, so potential for noise there (though we were not bothered during our stay).
• Not within walking distance of downtown Banff (about 35 minute walk). Short drive, but take note before booking.
• Parking is first-come first-serve, so if fully booked you may need to park in the underground garage. This is not a huge hassle, but is less convenient than parking immediately outside your unit.
• Units stocked with dishes and pots/pans, but no napkins or paper towels. Not much of a cost, but inconvenient the first meal when you are not aware of this.
We really enjoyed our experience. The value is good as you can easily sleep three couples, or a similar number of family members.
Other recommendations for Banff National Park: For dining, I would recommend The Keg steakhouse (2 locations in downtown Banff), and The Saltlick. Both offered really nice steak dinners. The ambiance in the Saltlick was especially nice. I would not recommend Earl’s, as the food was pedestrian and the service barely adequate. For activities, I would encourage you to take a ride up the gondola if the weather is nice, as the views are spectacular (as long as it is not a cloudy day). A cruise on Lake Minnewanka provides beautiful views and often yields wildlife sightings (we saw an eagle sitting in a tree, and a herd of bighorn sheep along the shoreline). If you have time, head to Johnston Canyon; you will get lots of exercise and get some great photos of a good size waterfall.
Of course, Lake Louise is a must, but get there early (by 7am if possible) to avoid the crowds and get the best photos when the morning light is optimal. If you have time and are in good shape, the hike to Lake Agnes teahouse is worth it. Lake Moraine is an equally spectacular lake setting, and only a 15 minute drive from Lake Louise. Best views are on the ridge at the end of the lake, rather than along the side of the lake. Hit the Icefields Parkway, but have your camera ready as you will almost certainly see wildlife – we saw about a dozen different bears during our drive up to Jasper (most were black bears right along the roadway, but we also saw a couple grizzly bears about 30 meters off the road. Avoid taking a tour on the glacier, as I was not worth the cost (my father-in-law said it was simply a $50 ticket for pure desolation to see a lot of snow and ice, which you can see for free during Minnesota winters).

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the perimeter, and not within the central circle, as the perimeter rooms are likel...

We stayed two nights with our UK visitors (July 8 & 9) in a 2 bdrm + loft. It was everything I had hoped for. Having the kitchen facilities was a definite plus. Would recommend staying here and we definitely plan on returning with future guests! Staff were warm, friendly and helpful.

My husband and I and our 4 children (ages 3, 5, 6, and 9) stayed at a 3-bedroom chalet (2 bedrooms plus a loft) for 5 nights and it was a great place to stay with kids. The chalet had 2 bathrooms, laundry machines, a family room/dining room, and a fully equiped kitchen where we were able to prepare breakfasts and dinners. We used one of the BBQ'ing areas for one of our dinners and that worked out well. The outdoor pool at the resort was a hit with the kids and the pool itself is set against a spectacular mountain backdrop. We also enjoyed taking short hikes off the resort itself and around the neighbouring campground. The resort is located a few minutes drive from downtown Banff. We would definately stay here again on another family vacation in Banff.
