On arrival at the Banff Springs, there was a mix up with our booking (made through a UK tour operator) and there were two rooms booked in our names. The receptionist gave us a choice- we could have the standard room in the main building or we could take the "signature" suite in the conference centre across the way. We chose the latter and were not disappointed!
The room had an elevated lounge area with beautiful views of the mountain backdrop, a huge soft bed and good sized bathroom. I would agree that the rooms are not particularly modern looking, but so what?!
There are several restaurants in the hotel (Sushi, Italian, German etc), although rather pricier that those you would find in Bannf. We ate in the Bow Valley Grill (a very spectacular and tasty buffet) and the Wauldhaus Pub (reasonable prices and great setting).
There is a huge indoor pool, whirlpool tub and an amazing outdoor heated pool which are all free to guests. The outdoor pool has fabulous views and being in an outside pool whilst it snowed around us was fun!
There is also a Spa which is complimentry when you book a Spa service (massages, facials etc).
There are regular buses to the three ski areas everyday, about 60 minutes to Lake Louise and 30 to Sunshine Village. There is also a ski hire place in the Conference Centre, but I found it easier to hire them at the ski areas. As an inexperienced skier, I found Lake Louise to be the most enjoyable.
The only (very minor) grumble would be the lack of free bus service into Banff centre. It is a pleasant 30 minute walk and there is a regular bus for about $2 or the concierge can call a cab which would cost about $5.
We tried a few restaurants in town and would highly recommend The Keg (great steaks), The Maple Leaf (absolutely gorgeous- try the elk steak!) and the Magpie & Stump (Mexican food, good atmosphere).
Without a shadow of a doubt, we will be back to the Banff Springs!
