“Holidays in Banff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2014

Stayed 4 nights over the Xmas holidays. This hotel is large and kind of crowed at times - it losses some of the one-on-one you get a other high end hotels with the staff even though we stayed on the gold floor. Room was very small. Had a great dinner at the Banffshire Club. Spa was clean and large with nice pools, etc.

We stayed for two nights at the beginning of January 2014. First off, we had high expectations to match the high reputation for this hotel. We were extremely disappointed to find that we were put into the Stanley Thompson wing - we asked if we could be put in the main hotel, and the unfriendly desk agent looked for .2 seconds and told us it was unavailable. To charge the same rate for the ST Wing as the rest of the hotel is absolutely ridiculous. You would honest to goodness be better off staying closer to the main Banff Avenue, as the ST wing looks just like your average hotel. The room was very small and extremely average, with a nice large bathroom. That being said, you usually don't care much about what a room is like since you shouldn't be spending a ton of time in it, but when you're spending that much money to stay at the Banff Springs, it better be pretty fantastic. Bottom line - to charge the same for the ST wing is ridiculous. If you're placed in the ST wing, go stay somewhere else.

The room issue aside, the hotel is pretty nice and it is fun to explore, though it didn't really live up to what I had remembered from when I was a child (perhaps to be expected). The outdoor pool is a must-see, especially if it is snowing. What a fantastic experience.

Parking is awful. $25 per day and there are hardly enough spots to fit everyone. They definitely need more parking spaces, and perhaps not charge that much.

We only ate at the hotel once (Rundle Lounge). The service was terrible - the waiter first asked us what our room number was, and I am convinced that once he saw we were in the ST wing (probably where they put the non-high-rollers), he gave us terrible service because he thought we couldn't afford it. We ordered two non-alcoholic drinks which we didn't get until after our food came out. Admittedly the food came out quick and was FANTASTIC, but while we were waiting for food and drinks, our waiter attended to a table next to us over 8 times while blatantly ignoring us. He would not even check to see if we needed water/even make eye contact. Was completely ridiculous in a place with such a high reputation.

Will NOT be returning. Can have a much better experience somewhere cheaper, friendlier and closer to town. Really disappointed. You can honestly experience the FBSH by just wandering around - you don't have to pay the exorbitant prices to stay here.

Room Tip: Avoid the Stanley Thompson Wing - you might as well stay somewhere else because it is nothing like t...

After a 4 day stay at Fairmont Lake Louise we were excited to arrive at Banff. This was the fifth fairmont in three weeks so we were excited to see what Banff had to offer. Being a Presidential member we had enough days stayed for a upgrade which I tried to explain to the young lady on the front desk who explained that this was not valid until the following year. Which is totaly the opposite to what is mention on the web site. So I went away a little disappointed. The room we stayed in for $500 a night was needing of a good facelift we had no room to hang clothes as the closet was way to small and the noise from one of the bars could be heard in our room until it closed. Our first meal was at the Rundal room. We sat ourselves down and receive the menu -------- a lot latter we were asked what we would like, we asked if they do gluten free pizza. Yes no problems place the order. -------------- a lot latter our meals arrive but not a gluten free pizza meal goes back ------------- two hours we decide to leave. I complained to the waiter then to Royry at the concierge desk. Who said to talk to room service as they could arrange a gluten free meal which they did so this was our eating at the Banff hotel. We loved the location but was left very disappointed with this last Fairmont hotel as it seems to be under staffed and a fairly tired. Personally I would say to the manager to go and see how they do all the eateries at lake Louise especially the deli.

We didn't stay here but had booked a Christmas day brunch meal for 12.30. On arrival at the Alberta new Brunswick room it was chaos. We counted at least 100 people waiting to be seated. It was great that the management had realised this and offered everyone waiting either orange juice or a buck's fizz as an apology. We were eventually seated 45 mins late on a round table with other guests. The food was buffet style with a huge selection on offer. From Breakfast food to full Christmas dinner items. We were somewhat disappointed with the turkey on offer as it had been really overcooked and was very dry. The pianist was excellent and added to the atmosphere. Would we come again next Christmas.... Probably no

My partner booked this as our last special night stay in Banff. We stayed on the Gold 5th floor and had our own junior suite. It was perfect in every way. Staff were so attentive and we had our own private lounge full of refreshments on the 5th floor and breakfast was fabulous too. Our room overlooked the Bow river and the mountains and it was a sight to behold. This hotel is something out of a fairytale and with all the snow it was just winter wonderland. We will be returning to stay once more in the future. I am still dreaming of being there.....

Room Tip: If you can afford it opt for the Gold 5th floor - its worth every penny.

My husband and I along with our two year old spent Xmas 2013 at the castle and it was pure magic!

Upon arrival one of the doormen gave our little girl a princess crown and she was so excited. She had been excited for fews to get to the 'castle' and wear her 'princess dresses' so it really started our visit off just perfect. Room was awesome - we had a little christmas tree so that added to our experience.

Xmas eve was great - we did the gingerbread workshop, Santa's workshop(crafts for kids), Santa sendoff, Xmas eve buffet with entertainment and finished off a magical day with live christmas carols.

Xmas day was also awesome with a special brunch and an awesome Xmas dinner buffet again.

We took advantage to have our family portrait taken as well by the photographer at the studio located in the castle. We have an awesome family pic in front of the great tree that we really treasure!

The only negative was we made all our reservations thru the concierge but the gingerbread workshop was missing along with our Xmas day brunch. Initially one of the servers turned us away from the gingerbread workshop but one of the managers told her to squeeze us in. THANK YOU SIR! Because it was one of our highlights!

The santa send off was our favorite part, so well done.

It was PRICEY! but we have memories that we treasure and will never forget.

Would LOVE to go back for the Xmas package again in the future.
