Arriving at the hotel, after a long day of shredding gnar, my friends and I sought solace in the banff aspen lodge. Solace we did not find. We were given a room in what they referred to as a "high traffic area". A more accurate description of this room would be "all traffic area". Nestled gently between the lobby, the hotub access door and the elevator in room 110 we heard everyone that checked in, used the tub, and used the elevator. At times we were waiting for the Santa Claus parade to pass by. If that wasn't enough, our patio door faced the hustle and bustle of beautiful banff ave. Not done yet... Unable to sleep, a hot shower seemed like a good idea. As I jumped in the shower and turned it on I found no shower curtain. Seriously??! Finishing my shower in spite of the evil aspen lodge I stepped out of the tub into the small lake of water which I had created. Thank god they gave us the wheelchair access room as I was able to grasp the bars on the wall to keep me from having a naked yard sale.
Clean rooms and nice hot tub though

I apologize that your Banff Aspen Lodge experience was not what was expected. As your reservation was booked one day before check-in, the hotel did not have a lot of guestrooms available. Our Front Office Manager did advise you of the guestroom location when making your booking. If possible to make your reservation further in advance, we would be happy to offer you a room in a different location. Your bathroom should have had a shower curtain and I am sorry that this was not the case. Front Desk is available 24 hours a day should you need anything after checking into your room. I am glad you were able to enjoy our outdoor hot tubs!
Sincerely,
Christy

We got a great rate here for the November Banff Film Festival and were given a quiet room with a queen bed, a large, comfortable sitting area, fridge and coffee maker. In the mornings, we looked forward to the tasty and substanial breakfast buffet that included eggs, sausages, bacon, cereals, toast, muffins, yogurt and fruit, and in the cold evenings it was a treat to lounge in the hot tub located right next to a crackling fireplace. As this hotel is very central, we just left our car (free parking) for the full three days and walked everywhere. It is very close to shops and restaurants and has an excellent cafe in the lobby.

Room Tip: I suggest the back, upper floor for quiet rooms.

We visited here during July 2014 during a week's visit to Banff and Jasper. This place has so many things going for it.
1. Room - Ours had two twin beds in what were essentially two separate sleeping areas. The beds were clean, comfortable, and cozy. The rooms were tastefully decorated. There are only two floors to this hotel so you are never far from the elevator or the staircases.
2. Dining - Breakfast was in a basement restaurant. It was buffet style and a reasonable value. Food was good.
3. There is a hot tub in the courtyard. After our day hikes, we soaked each night here. The water was hot and there is a wooden platform to cool off on. My only gripe is that they close the hot tub at 9PM. I think they could leave it open until 10PM or later.
4. Location - This lodge is a two minute walk to the downtown shopping area.
5. View - The view of the mountain out the left of the main entrance, well, what an uplifting view to take in at any time of the day or night.
6. Coffee shop - There is a terrific coffee shop just off the lobby. Nice atmosphere and good coffee.
7. The price of the hotel was reasonable.
8. There is a small parking lot behind the hotel but we found it was much easier to park on the street. Both hotel parking and street parking are free.

Room Tip: Choose a room far from the elevator to cut down on foot traffic past your room.

We just returned from a 3 night stay at the Aspen Lodge. The location is great - less than 5 minute walk to restaurants and shops. Our room was clean and spacious. Both check in and check out were speedy.

Things that I liked:
Proximity - short and easy walk to restaurants, grocery store, coffee shops, and retail stores.

Complimentary breakfast: nice selection including scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, several types of bread, home made granola, fruit, and yogurt. Each day had something a little bit different - i.e.; cinnamon buns one day, croissants another. I do gluten free so brought my own bread and toasted it up with my breakfast.

Out door hot tub: SO nice! There is a larger hot tub that would be suitable for kids or families as well as a smaller hot tub with an attached fireplace. The flooring around the hot tub is warm so you don't freeze your feet off getting in. There is also a stream room, sauna as well as bathrooms to shower and change. A word of warning, the towels provided are small and there are no robes in the rooms. I chose to go to one of the stores down the street and buy a cheap, fluffy robe.

The Aspen Lodge offers an environment incentive where you can choose to not have your room cleaned for any or all of your stay. If you choose the no housekeeping option they provide you with a voucher for any coffee drink in their cafe. We had 2 vouchers at the end of our trip and cashed them in for coffees for the road on our drive home. It was a nice little touch.

My 'complaints' are very minor. The biggest thing would be that the wi-fi is free but pretty much inaccessible as it is soooooo slow. As other guests have mentioned, the TV's are a bit outdated, so our preference would have been to use my iPad, which wasn't even remotely possible. I don't go to Banff to watch TV, however it's nice to have the option of sitting in your cozy room and watching something if you want to. Secondly, during our stay the hotel next door was being demolished - which obviously is no fault of the Aspen Lodge - it made for some early morning demolition noise and shaking of the building, and may mean subsequent construction noise.

Banff is expensive. If you're expecting a room like you might get in Las Vegas for your $250 (or more) a night, you're going to be disappointed. The Aspen Lodge is renovated and clean and a good, solid choice..it is not fancy or opulent or state of the art. As other guests have mentioned, there is a $250 deposit required upon check in, which I found to be a bit unusual. Another thing to consider is the location of your room - the ones that over look the hot tub have outside hallways and are likely to be cold in the winter (not the room itself but the walk to and from your room). Another thing to keep in mind is that weekends are obviously busier and a bit rowdier.

All in all a good place that we would stay at again. :)
