“A really bad experience!”

Banff Aspen Lodge

Dec 30, 2007
1/1 found this review helpful

stayed there for abt 5 days

First room given to me, shower didnt work.

Second room given to me, shower didnt work.

Third room ('upgraded') is only accessible by walking outside in the cold and has a 'fantastic' view of guests in another property.

The access cards repeatedly didnt work. had to constantly go down to the front office to get them reprogrammed.

Internet station is out of order.

And one time, my room wasnt closed properly after housekeeping, so when I got back in the afternoon, it was partially open and I could open the door without the cardkey

Staff were pleasant enough but seemed clueless abt the problems plaguing the hotel.

In their defense, the GM did call and comp me one nights stay for my troubles.

Basic breakfast, adequate but nothing fancy nor interesting

The pool area is still being renovated and construction is ongoing. If you will be there during daytime, might have to contend with workmen.

Would really look at all the other hotels lining the street, this property needs a major relook in its setup.

Pretty much the worst experience in all my years of staying in different hotels.

At the Banff Aspen Lodge, we pride ourselves on ensuring that if guest feels they have had a negative experience, we do our best to compensate them and ensure are content before checking out of our hotel.

After speaking with the above guest and hearing that they were satisfied with our compensation for their stay (one night’s stay complimentary), I am surprised to find this review on TripAdvisor. As always, we appreciate all guest feedback and we take this information to make the Banff Aspen Lodge a better hotel!

Our courtyard renovations have now been completed ~ thank you to all our guests for their patience during this exciting project. Two new out door hot tubs with an outdoor fireplace now occupy our central courtyard. Unwind after a day of skiing or relax in the summer under a sparkling night sky!

General Manager

“Great stay and Breakfast!”

Banff Aspen Lodge

Despite the few negative reviews we read this hotel was great! We had a wonderful stay, the staff were very nice (from booking the room through telephone to our check in and out). The room was clean, bed comfy and we had a fantasitc view of the mountains. The decor of the room felt like you were staying in a cottage, a very country feel perfect for the surroundings. The room we stayed in the bathroom (tub and toilet) was separate from the sink area which was nice because one person could be brushing their teeth while the other taking a shower. The tub/toliet area was very warm, felt like a sauna which was great because it was so cold outside that day! The breakfast had to be the best! Nice modern restaurant style decor, sit down continental breakfast. Excellent staff in the breakfast room!

The only downside, if you want to use internet they charge you $10 for 24 hours for wireless connection. Also, the underground parking spaces are limited so if you want a spot you have to park early and intend not to drive your car later that night as it was 8pm and there were no spaces. Either than that, this place was affordable, close to downtown Banff Ave shops, and easy to find.

Nothing wrong with this hotel. Yes, basic but still a nice place for staying. The room rate included a trip for 2 on the gondola, to go all the way up the mountain, so a very good deal. The gondola ride only I think is worth 25 CAD per person.
It's reasonably cheap, our room was clean so I do reccomend it.

“Fears unfounded!”

Banff Aspen Lodge

Sep 27, 2007

Stayed here as part of a tour - and was somewhat anxious given previous reviews on this site. However my fears were totally unfounded. We were made to feel very welcome; our room, on the third floor, was quiet, clean and more than adequate for a two night stay. Yes, it probably did need a bit of updating, but given the convenience of the location and the super complimentary breakfast, that's certainly something I could live with.

“Comforting and Cozy”

Banff Aspen Lodge

Spring, Texas
Sep 21, 2007

On a recent business/pleasure trip to Alberta we had four days in between commitments and chose to visit Banff. Our hotel concierge in Calgary suggested the Asoen Lodge because he had stayed there and liked it. Also I didn't want to spend the $400 to $600 at the big hotels AND I didn't want a dump (though I don't think you can find one in Banff anymore). We were SO PLEASED when we got there. First, there's parking in a garage (not on the street or a public alley). The lobby is comfy, plaids and piney prints, with a beautiful fireplace room for relaxing with friends. The rooms are small enough to be cozy but spacious for two. We had a basic room (not supreme). We loved the wood ceiling (we were on the third floor). The fabrics (drapes, spreads, carpets) were all in good condition, not stained, torn or marred). The bathroom is newish and well lit. The shampoo and skin cream are great. Even the towels are fluffy. The breakfast room is elegant, modern and spacious and encourages conversation with fellow guests. The granola was, I'm sure, homemade and a fabulous treat. The baked goods were fresh and of a wide variety. I should also say that the location is great. We could walk to the town shopping area. Banff is undergoing a major street renovation but we were still able to easily negotiate that and enjoyed shopping. The hotels around the Aspen had restaurants and we tried some of those as well as the "downtown" locations. Our room was over a side street so we didn't have any road noise. We didn't try the hot tub or sauna so I can't comment on that. They did look inviting but it's just not our thing. We were very happy at the Aspen for three nights. If I made only one suggestion it would be that the mattress needs to be replaced. It is dipping in the center. But that would be it. We will return when we go back to Banff. Thanks Aspen.
