“Week of Snowboarding”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2014

Let me start off by saying we had a great time here and the location is really awesome.

Starting with the good. We were upgraded to the Assiniboine suite (because we were on our honeymoon I suspect). We got a nice cheese platter as a welcome which was awesome. The bathroom in this room is THE BEST. The shower has two heads in it and is a steam shower, the bath is big and has jets. The only thing about the room that sucked was the flies, there were A LOT of flies in there, and there wasn't really anything done except for they gave us these things to attract them that did nothing at all.

Note: The Bathroom got this review up from 3 to 4. It was seriously good for the week we were there.

Food was OK. The Butternut Squash soup was good as was the Lamb Rack from the Eagles nest. My husband really liked the Banana bread for breakfast.

The killer for this place is the service, it is totally disjointed and I would say apart from a few really amazing staff members at the Chimney Lounge, people were generally slow and disorganised. As a whole this wasn't a big deal for us, and the staff were all super friendly and nice but if you are expecting efficiency and consistency you will be disappointed. (I'll also add that it was really quiet for most of the time we were there, can't imagine what they would be like if it was busy). This might seem lame but it was also annoying how inconsistent the cleaning of the room was, and they never cleaned up the flies that ultimately died every day.

Random side note: The pillow for me was horrible! Way to poofy and gave me a sore neck. In hindsight i should have asked if there were any others, but there were 6 pillows on our bed and they were all exactly the same. (Also the ones in my sisters room were the same as well).

On snowboarding: The equipment hire staff were great as was one of our instructors (His name was Taran, ask for him!). The ski school however did not give us very good advice. It was -30 something a couple of days we were there so they shut everything down until it warms up a bit. We ended up doing a lesson in -25 or something which they told us later was not a great idea. Would have been nice to have been told that BEFORE we did the lesson which we could have just rescheduled! They were also pretty rude about it when we talked to them, like we should have known.

Taran was our second instructor and he was great, gave us good tips awesome analogies, and really helped us with our nerves. (Also was good with the boys who were a bit better than myself and my sister). Ask for him, we found him to be really great!

So most of my review is pretty bad, but you can't beat being up on the mountain. You don't have to get up early to do the 25min gondola ride every day and you can go straight from snowboarding right into the hot tub. This and our bathroom were by far the main reasons we would stay up there. If they improved their service it would be an amazing place to stay. It is just a shame that the service is generally so inconsistent.

Room Tip: Get a suite if you can, the standard rooms are pretty small. Assiniboine is great.

Just got back from the resort. This is the second time we have stayed here, But It will be our last. It is just way over priced at $380/night. Service was disorganized and very slow on every occasion. It just seemed like there wasn't anyone at the helm of the ship.

This quality of this hotel is mixed. The best thing is the location, which is mid-mountain and only steps from the lift and amazing skiing. This helps make up for a lot of other flaws. The rooms vary tremendously, as we saw when staying there with our ski club. Our friends in the West Wing Lofts had rooms which were large and beautiful, with tall windows and fireplaces. The Main Lodge rooms are small, about the size of a standard room on a cruise ship. Our Main Lodge room had a balcony, which helped it feel more open. Our friends across the hall had an even smaller room, without a closet, and a window that looked at a wall of snow. So book your room carefully. Another thing to watch out for is the cleanliness of the room, towels, and bed linens. It’s tolerable but not on par with most US ski resorts. We did find all the restaurants to be excellent, good food, wine and service. The public areas of the hotel, such as the bar, fireplaces, hot tub, TV room, and ski lockers, are all extremely nice and comfortable. The beds were also very comfortable. The skiing was superb, with lots and lots of mountain to ski. It’s great that the hotel is mid-mountain and you can avoid the crowds at the base. The staff was nice and courteous.

Room Tip: Go for the West Wing rooms. Avoid odd-numbered rooms in the Main Lodge.

Hello Marion,

Thanks for writing a review of the Sunshine Mountain Lodge at Sunshine Village.

We agree that the location of our hotel in the Canadian Rockies is unparalleled and we’re glad you agree!

We are happy to hear that you enjoyed the on-mountain dining and the amenities. A hot tub after a day of skiing is really great, isn’t it?

Thanks again for all of your comments; I ensure that I will follow up with my team.

We hope to see you at the Sunshine Mountain Lodge again soon.

We had a suite booked at the Sunshine Mountain Logde and we looked forward to a great overnight experience. We do live in Banff and we have a season pass. We just wanted to enjoy a special ski weekend with a nice hotel room. The room was very nice and clean, great view and just like we have imagined. There were just two dirty towels in our room, it looked like rust stains form the washing mashine. The front desk team at night and in the morning was very friendly.
Our dining experience was disappointing.
We had a table reserved, at the Eagle's Nest, we knew it will be pricy and looked forward to a good dining experience. The dining room was dark and the service was very average. We ordered one appetizer and two mains, we had the Lamb and the Bison. We ordered both "medium rare", the Bison was ok but the Lamb was more "blue". The sides were partly undercooked and my potatoes tasted old. The chef showed us he had no passion in cooking or in arranging the food on the plate. Same experince we had with our breakfast. We had the "Egg, Bacon Saugage" plate. The taste of the food was just aweful, we both did not finish our plate. No spice on the egg or potatoes - it looked like cantine food and tased like it. The bacon saw the last time a pan maybe an hour before it was served on our plate. The service was very bad, we felt more like to be a nuisance for the server. Before I stayed at the Lodge a have read the comments on trip advisor and they already had bad reviews about the food. I really hoped it might have changed since 2012 or 2013.

We were very disappointed with the hotel room and the food in the dining room. The food was overpriced and we both couldn't finish our meals. We ended up getting chips out of the vending machine. The room was terrible. There were stains on the sheets and the bathroom was not clean. The only good thing about this hotel was the staff and the fact that it is on the mountain. With all of the amazing hotels in Banff, I would recommend staying in Banff than here.

We stayed at the Sunhine resort just before the Christmas 2013. Upon arrival check-in was smooth, lugage was taken care of and before we new it we sat in the lift upstairs (tip 1: Ensure you are wearing warm clothes and shoes you can use in snow when going up the mountain)

(tip 2: pack at least one carry on to take with you that contains things you need to get you trough the first hour - e.g. a toy for the kids, some snacks etc.)

We had a West Wing Loft Room. The room was great and we stayed there with two adults and three kids. The room was clean, bathrooms were nice and clean (kids liked the jacuzzi) and beds were good, had no problems falling asleep after a day at skiing. Only minor comment is that there is limited room to store your bags. One night we had very loud neighbours and the hotel really made an effort to stop this noise (and were succesfull)

Food was good and not very expensive compared to other resorts we stayed in the past. During Dinner and breakfast there was always room and service was prompt!

The Skiing was amazing. Very good ski school that made the first ski experience for our kids unforgettable!!!

A Great ski holiday trip and we will be back next year - when can we make reservations for 2014/2015 season?

We have stayed overnight at this Lodge 3 times in the last three weeks as we are staying in Calgary for a number of weeks and have season passes.

The reception staff both at the base and at the top of the mountain are excellent. We have loved the 'early check-in service' so that we have been able to use the room on our first day.

The service in the Java Lift is usually good and we have used this facility for a quick lunch time snack. However the service in the Chimney Corner for both dinner and breakfast has been terrible. Each time we go we are hoping for an improvement but have had meals brought at different times for each of us, we have had to go and get our own cutlery, we have had to call over a waitperson more interested in clearing a table rather than giving us menus after 5 minutes of sitting down. There seems to be enough staff working but they are not providing a reasonable level of service. On the whole the staff are pleasant and friendly but appear to lack customer service training and supervision.

The food quality has also been mixed with tired rocket for salads and a fruit bowl served at breakfast that was off. One of our cooked breakfast's had sausages and bacon that seemed to have been reheated and not cooked freshly. The coffee at breakfast has not been hot and we have had to request water.

We hope to have at least one more overnight stay so maybe by our fourth time things will have improved.
